My last job did, one year a new employee showed up about an hour late & he was fired within 2 weeks
My current job is “required” in that we are very small so if one of us couldn’t make it we would just change the date, I have no issue with it, there’s only 5 of us plus a few additional guests & we enjoy hanging out together
I also don’t work in an office where I see everyone everyday

Ours is in NYC, not mandatory, I'm choosing not to go.

Something tells me that a lot of O-T posters have been "Required" to leave their office Christmas parties.

We have never had a "requirement" to attend. But I work for a fun company, we generally like each other, and several of us are social outside of the office. Plus, its an open bar and typically catered with delicious food.

Our last meeting was at the same place, and the CEO's neighbor catered it and the food was awful. I'm assuming the same one tonight. Told my wife if we had to we would pick up dinner after and eat on the way home.

This year isn't, but the last two were. In my company's defense, it started during working hours so I was technically on the clock. Our company party is normally fun, so even though I don't have to, I'm making the hour drive to this year's on Saturday.

MY work does our during office hours. So it's a free lunch and work only a couple of hours that day.

Every employee lives in another state besides myself and the owner, so no party for us. We do a Secret Santa shipped gift thing that we do virtually for like an hour or two.
We've never been to my husband's holiday party in our life.

Tell the boss, “I was getting ready to go, but got hit with a bad case of diarrhea”

Just depends if you want to play the game. If required, yes you have to be paid. Upper Management make decisions based on who plays the game or not.
It's not that crazy to spend a few hours on a Friday evening or Saturday evening once a year mucking up with co workers with free drinks and food to move up in life.
Or, just be petty and don't go but don't be upset when you get passed up for a raise or promotion in six months.

Never have.
Why not just have it at the office during normal hours if very few people don't show up?

have to ..."Required"
---seems like you have to if it's required.

They better pay you if they require it.

My son works for a company that is holding its Xmas party and wants everyone to wear an ugly Xmas sweater. The employees are all blue collar. WTF? That's just ghey. Read the room boss. Those guys are not doing that.
Son says the only way he will go is if they pay him to be there. Otherwise, it's a no.

Same. Boss usually leaves early and lets us follow suit, too.

Our company has departmental Christmas luncheons. However, as a treat to them a senior executive will attend each one.
I have to go to 3 luncheons this month.
One lucky department (draw from hat) gets to have the CEO attend.

It should only be "required" if during normal working hours.

I have worked for a company that required you to go to social events however they were held in the afternoon during normal business hours. If you didn’t go, you were required to take PTO.

There was essentially a "strongly recommended" holiday party after work hours earlier this week. A volunteer list to help was passed out and some form of gift was to be given out.
The gift was not a bonus, so I didn't care and I found it off-putting that we were being asked to volunteer at our own holiday party. The party was not convenient for me location-wise, so I passed.
I'm here to do my job, not mingle with random people from other departments as I silently fume that they're pumping up this "holiday gift" as if it's better than a bonus.

That makes it work and if you are hourly and you should demand to be paid to be there.
