By you're measure..65k in LA...10 yrs later would be 195k/yr...and you couldn't have invested unless 200k/yr. I know, it's tough to be a man and work.

Check out the Van Nuys, Burbank, Sherman Oaks areas. May be able to find a decent rental around there in your price range and not terribly far to westwood / UCLA area.

I spend a few weeks a year in LA and its grown on me.

If you added all the ghettoish areas of central LA together you would have a city the size of Dallas. However, LA offers a lot more than most places, and some of the most exquisite areas in America are found in LA County. Not even counting Hollywood you have Malibu, Rancho Palos Verdes, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades. I could go on..

I love these threads. You got 6+ pages of people who vacationed once in LA talking like they grew up there I've been to L.A. 6 times in the last 2 years (in a lot of residential/low income areas as well, for my job) and haven't come close to scratching the surface enough to answer this for OP.
