Just bought a small bungalow in Santa Monica and it was well over $400k. It was also the least expensive single family home in Santa Monica. I doubt $400k would get him a condo.

I live in Redlands, about 25 minutes from Ontario, much more affordable than LA county or OC, very nice place, but one heck of a drive to LA.
1 bedroom for $1800 though? That’s insane for the area. I know that prices have gone up, but three years ago, I was renting out my house in neighboring Loma Linda for $2000, 4 bedroom, 2.75 bath, 2800 square feet. Sold it for about $400k.
Rancho Cucamonga, right next to Ontario, is a good area and affordable as well.

Agreed. I would put Chicago over L.A. as well after having spent time in all 3 cities.
If you can stand the winters, Chicago’s quality of life for the average person shits all over New York and LA. It’s Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta prices for top tier quality of life (NYC, LA, SF) if you’re willing to hold on January through March.
That’s a tough sell for some people, though. Still, if you’re in your 20’s, you can live a damn amazing single life on 60K/year in Chicago. If you’re married with household income above 200K, you’re definitely not struggling too much.
It’s an expensive place compared to, say, New Orleans or Baton Rouge, but compared to peer cities, I definitely consider it the best bang for the buck. I’ve lived all around the country, and I am thoroughly convinced of this.

I loved living in DTLA. Always moving opposite of traffic and anything you need is right outside of your door. Rent somewhere with a rooftop pool. Don’t buy right now.

100% truth. A couple of my cousins live there in really nice neighborhoods not making baller money. Despite growing up in BR, they have adjusted to the winters just fine, and really enjoy the weather the rest of the year.
I was absolutely blown away by how much I enjoyed the place when I went. Of the big 5 (Houston, Dallas, NYC, L.A., and Chicago), it was easily my favorite.

That's pretty par for the course for a lot of good careers (engineering, architecture, construction, etc). One of my cousins in Chicago is an architect who worked on the Wrigley Field renovations.
I made far north of $60k out of undergrad in construction before I went to law school. I worked for a year and lived off of that money alone for over 2 years

300-400k you'll have to commute. Look into semi valley and Morepark. You can take the 118 through the San Fernando valley and the 405 into ucla.

It really isn't that bad. We bought a new home on an acre in the seattle area, but to keep within our budget, we live about 20 miles outside of the city. I drive to a bus park-and-ride then bus into the city. Door to door is about 90 minutes, but I do get a good bit of work done on the bus, so time is not wasted. It used to take me 45 minutes from SE EBR to downtown and it was all driving in traffic. I will take my current commute any day.

I went there for the first time last month, and even knowing what to expect, I was still surprised. You could just pop a tent and live on the sidewalk.

My daughter is doing this and loves it. Moved from BR to Houston for a year then on to LA and has been very happy with LA this past year or so.

Seriously, If you want a house for $300-400k you're going to be in Riverside or San Bernardino County. So about a 3 hour commute each way to Westwood. I got outa there the end of 1989.

My mom gave me and my sisters a house in Santa Monica just blocks from beach.
The air pollution away from the beach is horrible.
You have to plan trips based on traffic.
I hope your wife has a portable career.

I lived in Manhattan Beach a block from the beach....great place to live. Lived in West Hollywood which was nice lots of restaurants and bars. Hot women. Also lived in Venice/MDR.

Best advice in this thread. Out of those 3, sherman oaks is closest to UCLA, but is the nicest and most expensive of those areas. Van nuys is a very large area of the valley, and borders sherman oaks to the north. Deep parts of van nuys are ghetto, but the area bordering sherman oaks isn’t bad; that’s where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Burbank is farther east, and has many nice areas, but price is probably comparable to sherman oaks and will add at least 20 min each way to your commute; don’t bother.
I’m born and raised in LA and work near UCLA.
Couple questions I have are
-how many hours per day are you willing to commute?
-what hours will you be working (if working some weird hours maybe commute won’t be as bad as a 9-5)?
-how much space do you and your wife need?
-what type of area do you and your wife want to be in?
The valley is good for families because parking and traffic aren’t as crazy as in the city. There’s still great restaurants and things to do, and access to shopping for necessities is pretty easy.
Santa Monica, WeHo, Westwood, etc. are more lively and vibrant but cost of living is higher and traffic/parking is much more stressful to deal with.
