I have recently accepted a job with a new company, and we will be moving to LA. I will get a raise, but not enough of a raise to justify the difference in cost of living where I'm currently at and in LA. Regardless, it's a dream job for me and we're going to make it work. It's just the wife and I, no kids.

Trying to do some research on areas to live, I know we have some LA/Cali posters. I will be working near UCLA, if that helps any. Our budget for a home would be 300-400k, and frankly that's a generous budget and only that high because it has to be. We will probably have to rent, because I'm not sure if we can find a place in a nice neighborhood with that budget. Any LA folks with some advice and things to consider?

I've only been a few times and hated it. Be prepared to spend half your life in traffic.

I probably would just rent a small cheap (whatever cheap for LA is) place while I figured out the area. I would rather have extra money to do cool stuff in Cali, than be house poor.

You will be living in a house with bars on the doors and windows in that area on that budget.

I realize that's an impossibly low budget. Which is why I said we will likely have to rent. But I wasn't sure if there were some areas outside of LA that would be worth looking into that might be more affordable (even though traffic would be a nightmare)

Los Angeles is basically a giant Baton Rouge with Baton Rouge traffic that's lucky enough to have good weather and a few beaches and mountains next to it to at least make it not so miserable to live there.

We could probably do $1800-2200/month

I couldn't imagine you finding anything but a Studio Apartment for that price. I have heard they have daily openings in the Compton area that are fairly reasonable.

It's crazy how you have ghettos and nice neighborhoods intersecting each other.

I mean you could always look into Riverside/Rancho Cucagmona/Ontario area for that price. Still not sure you could make it work and traffic will be a bitch allday/everyday from that area to UCLA area.

I have a friend that lives in The Redlands (Ontario area) and rents a 1 bedroom for $1800 a month and drives to downtown L.A. for work. I don't know how he does it.

As for OP, look into renting in Culver City.

I used to live in West LA, which is pretty close to where you will be at. Just realize these are the same people that argue which city is better between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

To answer you question, you're going to have to rent. That's a very nice part of town and you're not even close to a housing budget. Be ready to pay 1800+ for a 1 bedroom plus utilities. If you can't afford that, you're going to have to decline the offer.

You can try up the 101 but there are sketchy areas and traffic is fricking atrocious.

LA is only about 30% white. Most of them live south down to San Diego. Congrats tho. Southern California is probably the best place on the planet for a human to live.

You'll be good...you have to be aggressive in your search though... research the neighborhoods and pound the pavement...phone calls aren't the best course of action.

Congratulations though...I wouldn't trade living here for anything.

Arguably the dumbest thing I've ever read on here.
