Fell for it once. Never again.
If you give them money, just make it a gift, not a loan. It's the only way you'll stay friends.

I won’t lend money to family. If they money need it I gift it with no expectation of repayment. Never loan and expect payback it’s a formula for disaster in the relationship.

If your friend has medical debt from a serious condition, loan the money. If your friend is in debt because of his lifestyle, don’t loan the money.
On the flip side, I look at loaning people money as go away payments. Also, I have agreed to loan money before only with a promissory note . You will be surprised how many friends got upset and said forget it. Good luck but don’t beat yourself up. It’s your money.

Do not loan this person money. If you want to GIVE the person money, you need to have zero expectation on receiving any back.
Zero.
Either help with zero expectations or don't help at all.

My MIL passed and my wife and sisters stood to have a substantial amount after the estate was settled, my wife was executor.
During the process one sister was in bad straights so we loaned her 3 grand of our own money, not from estate. Several months later the estate was settled and my wife distributed the money to everyone. Meaning her sister had a lot of money. She didn’t pay us back the 3 grand for nearly 6 months. Really pissed me off.

Hell, I’ve loaned my children money knowing I’ll never see it again…

See what kind of assets he owns, car, watch, boat, 4wheeler etc… tell him you’ll loan him the money but will take ownership of the car for example if he doesn’t pay you back in a predetermined timeframe.

Depends on whether it is a charity or enabling. And it is a charity, not loan. You'll never be paid back, and that's OK.

IF you do, go in with the expectation you’ll never get it back
If that bothers you, say “no”
