My mom just informed me that my cousin is now asking to be referred to by her middle name rather than her first name. I guess if that’s what she wants but I still think it’s super weird. As far as I know she isn’t named after anybody in particular so it isn’t like when someone’s named after a parent Who’s a POS and that person wants To distance themselves from that. She just wants to be referred to by a different name.

ETA: mom just told me her mother changed the spelling of her own name when she was in her 20s. So I guess it runs in the family

I just read today that the mayor of New York was born Warren Wilhelm Jr. He has changed his name twice and now goes by Bill de Blasio

Yep. She shortened her first and used her middle name as her last. I still can't help but call her by her original name. It is just weird.

Yeah same. I literally grew up seeing this cousin multiple times a year for 20 years. It’s bizarre.

That is a serious hatred of his father

I once knew a guy that goes by “Jason”. Jason is the kind of guy who had a rough history involving a lot of illegal sh*t. And someone you don’t mess with. But a cool guy. I saw him at a Lauberge in Lake Charles one random weekend in the poker room. This is after a 2 year absent. I said “what’s up Jason?”. He whispered “my name is Don”.

My friend had a sketchy as hell childhood with a bat shite crazy family. She had an equally rough first marriage with some tragedy thrown in. I think she did it as a "clean slate" type thing. She just wanted to distance herself from all that. She's done well since, though.

My mom is from a family of seven, and four of them go by different names than their given name.

Grandma: nickname
Uncle: nickname
Aunt: middle name
Aunt: legally changed name

Understandable. As far as I know my cousin isn’t distancing herself from her family and none of them are bad/abusive.

Maybe she just didn't like her name.

I'm changing my name when I win the big lotto and will relocate to BFE.

Too many co-workers, so-so friends, & distant family (that I don't interact with now ) would come out the wood-works with a desperate "last hope" sob-story for a handout.

Not to mention the con artists, scammers & predators looking for that new money dude they just saw on the news.

I have a cousin who changed her surname to her mother’s maiden name because she was really pissed at her dad.

It was pretty common when hiring people for them not to go by their given name. It came up a lot because company policy was to refer to everyone by their legal name and a lot of people who go by something else but never change their name. People would get mad when you couldn't change their name in the system and the system controlled how everything got printed, plaques, awards, name takes, certificates, certifications, everything was controlled by the legal name entered in the system.

Not really, but my wife had 2 people in her class (of 10ish) that they called by their first names for over a year before finding out that everyone else in those 2 people’s lives call them by their middle name.

Also, one of her childhood friends was married, and a few years later her husband decided to change his last name after looking into some genealogy stuff, so the husband, wife, and at least 1 kid changed their last names.
