My name was changed as a kid due to technical conflict with a family member I was named after.

Yes, back when I was in private practice, I went to court to have my SIL's name changed from Gloria to Marie.

I almost changed my name to my mother's maiden name during my senior year of HS. Way too much to get into as far as many of the reasons. My grandfather was a connected politician and I left HS planning on going into politics. It would have also shot me up to "Prince William status" and bumped my 1st cousin, the only son of my grandpa's only son to "Prince Henry status". I went as far as the 'if you change your name and screw up you are cut off' discussion. The family homestead/farm was built by the early-mid 19th century ancestors after leaving Norway. It was passed down from father to son for generations. My uncle can't move back because of allergies and my dipshit Cousin "Harry" is too busy indoctrinating the Austin, TX youth with his "Democratic Socialism" ideology.
In the end I just couldn't make the change and hurt my other grandparents by leaving for college under a different name. Wouldn't trade the following 10 years of my relationship with them for nothing. As far as first names...I ran into plenty of girls in college who wrote the first initial and then used their middle name. I still kind of wish that was the case with my wife.

I know a girl in high school that changed to spelling of her name. Her name was Emily and she changed it to Emilie

They didn't change their name if they want to be called by their middle name instead of first name. I know plenty of people that go by their middle name because they like it better than their first name. Nothing weird about that.

Bill has been his nickname since childhood. de Blasio is his mother's name. Apparently his father was an angry drunk. I'm not a fan of the guy, but his name change isn't anything really out of the ordinary. There have been at least two presidents that didn't go by their birth names.

When my grandfather registered for the draft for WW I, he took his middle name as his first name, dropped his first name, and just came up with a new middle name that he liked.
From that day forward he had a new legal name.

When I was in 2nd grade, I convinced my teacher that I went by a different name than my first or middle. Took until open house for my parents and the teacher to catch on
