Take it as motivation to save and invest. Set yourself up to FIRE if you so choose. Got to be disciplined to make it happen but working until 65+ isn't necessary. Many could afford to cut back or retire fully in 50s or sooner if they just choose to enjoy the smaller things in life and not live at or beyond their current means. Over rewarding yourself along the way for all that toil often keeps you in a perpetual hole.

Its not, but overpopulation ..debt everywhere..and competition to have a better paying job ruins it for anyone who can afford it once or twice a year.

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. “You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” said the businessman to the fisherman.

“You should be working rather than lying on the beach!”

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, “And what will my reward be?”

“Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!” was the businessman’s answer. “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, “You will make money and you’ll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!”

“And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman again.

The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman’s questions. “You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!” he said.

“And then what will my reward be?” repeated the fisherman.

The businessman was getting angry. “Don’t you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!”

Once again the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?”

The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won’t have a care in the world!”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”

It was really bad when I lived in Wisconsin, I remember getting off of the plane in Appleton after a week in the Bahamas and that arctic air hit me. I was extremely sour for at least a month but now when I get back home here in Texas the weather is more tolerable. I make it a point to close my laptop at a certain time in the afternoon, get into my pool, turn on yacht rock then enjoy myself for at least an hour.

There's a real divide that's not often discussed ime. There are people who perceive that the natural state of man is "nasty, brutish, and short," and anything above that is a blessing which has been hard-earned (both individually and over the generations). There are people who perceive that the natural state of man is simplicity and ease, and any adversity or complexity must therefore be the result of some artificial imposition or unjust actor.

Dealing with teenagers has starkly brought this division to light.

Nothing more depressing than the aftermath of a great vacation. Especially when you have kids and realize giving up and moving to Southeast Asia is no less than a decade out.

well, you know, you don't have to live that way. Plenty don't. Just realize you may not be able to spend 4 days in Hilton Head Island with your wife and fly home if you don't.

There are few feelings in life worse than being hungover at a vacation destination airport waiting for your departing flight seeing all the arrivals of people fixing to have fun.

NO...at least not in the over-scheduled, hum-drum routine we have adopted in todays society for a little cash in return so that we can then purchase the items we need to live.

Wrong! That is how they want you to feel in order to keep up the rouitine.
Personally, I did it! I found when I was thoroughly entrenched in the rat race that my vacations more often than not were camping, hiking, skiiing and anything involving mountains. Nothing gave me more peace of mind than the quiet and beauty of the wilderness. So I made a plan and made it happen. I left the south and moved up to the mountains of Vermont where I now have a modest authentic true log cabin on 50 beautiful acres with amazing views, nearby moderate white water river access (5 mins), waterfalls (20 mins), and most importantly no traffic or traffic lights! I have a huge garden, some chickens and rabbits, my 2 Cane Corsos and a nearby friendly farm gal I spend time with occasionaly. So I am here to tell you that if you have the will...there is a way to make this life more free and happier for yourself and I highly recommend doing it.

It was just called living. Anxious because food was scarce and depressed because someone you know died giving birth.

I’m heading home too. From Missouri. Next trip is probably the east coast. Carolinas or similar.

Felt like that the first time I visited some Rocky Mountain states. Wondered why, if this is an option, would somebody not live here. Was the first time I felt alive in years. Been working on plan to relocate after the youngest goes off to college. I’m outta this high humidity sauna of a state the day I’m able.

If your wife is above a 6 we are starting a self sustaining farm/compound just south of Convent. Is your kid farming age?

You can move to Spain where everything closes early every day.

Or move to Italy where everything shuts down for a month while everyone is at the beach. Business literally close for a whole month there.

In the US you can get a part time job and be just as poor as the Italians.

Humanity once had to work from sun up to sun down just to keep from starving. Seven days a week.

We have it comparatively easy now.

But you still gotta go out there, kill it, and bring it home.

Unless you live off the governtment dole.

Because some of those areas are really remote.

Which would mean your jobs and schools would be limited. So more people live in denver or salt lake instead of the remote areas of idaho.

the younger generation is figuring this out quickly, not completely by choice but they are in yolo mode instead of “save for a house and retirement” mode
