Sadly, the people on the germanwings flight that the copilot deliberately crashed were well aware of their fate.

That concept would only work in a high altitude situation. It would take 2000 or 3000 feet before it slowed down enough to safely land on the ground, so any issues that would happen near the ground (i.e. Takeoff and landing) would negate any safety factor that ridiculously expensive design would add. There's a single engine plane on the market right now that has an emergency parachute that can carry the plane safely to the ground of deployed, but it again only works in a high altitude situation. The highest death rate in private aviation is in these same planes, in large part because pilots with little training and lots of money believe they can buy safety with this plane and it parachute (plus it's a pretty sweet ride and is quite fast).

Do you have a fear of flying or a fear of crashing?
I love to fly. The thought of crashing scares the hell outta me.

Loss of cabin pressure at that altitude probably limited their consciousness to a few seconds at most.
A few passengers in the Lockerbie bombing were still alive after the impact with the ground but died before crews could save them.

I think I have read that Turbulence has never taken down a commercial airliner. so you dont need to worry about that

I watched a few videos on YouTube about airplane turbulence. Having that extra knowledge helped (seriously, look up turbulence on YouTube--even the "terrifying" ones don't seem so terrifying). Also helped that I had to fly through a bad storm/heavy turbulence and made it through safely. Reminds me how safe planes are, how well trained pilots are, and that I've already gone through the bad stuff.

Definitely more of a fear of crashing. It's not quit to the B.A. Baracas level yet.

The flight I was on, people were screaming and crying. Folks in front of me were praying very loudly. So that kind of made the situation a lot worse.

Know someone killed in a small plane crash on Friday. Flying is a way of life today, it's best to get over it.

I have a greater fear of driving in Baton Rouge

Might wanna look up the Mt. Fuji aircraft that was shredded in mid air
Look up BOAC flight 911
My sister was a flight attendant for DAL. Her story about the 757 flight going knife edge scared me. Both Captain and FO were white coming out of the flight deck

I once had a pilot abort a landing at ATL because of poor visibility. Scared the shite out of me

Not me. Plane crash would be way more badass

I have a deep fear of flying after having an extremely bad experience on a short flight from Jackson to Nashville.
We've all had bumpy flights. Drink some booze before the flight.

Why don't they make planes like in this link, seems like a simple concept and could save a lot of lives?
Because I don't want to pay another $200 per ticket in the one in a billion shot I have of my plane crashing. And from the article, there's this:
quote:
While another had concerns too: 'This whole concept dramatically weakens the airframe because now you have joints and fittings to connect a fuselage and a body together where once you had a whole fuselage to reinforce the airframe.'l
So it makes the flight even more dangerous.

That, and a car crash I would have a better idea on what's going on. If I go through the divider and my guts paint the road red, and I live for a few more minutes, that would be horrible. Plane crash though, we start going down, I momentarily think "Oh shite", I then feel like I'm on a rollar coaster, and then I pass out and die when the plane hits the ground. That seems much more preferable to me.

I don't fly anymore. I love flying but I would rather drive. It's s control thing I guess. In the air you have zero control.

Take an ambien or some booze for the flight, will make things a lot more calm.
DCA is probably my favorite airport to fly into, the river approach gives you some great views of the DC area. If you're flying on a windy day it makes for a lot of fun with some of those turns.

Landed at Reagan in DC about a year ago and I can say the approach and landing there made me personally thank the pilot as I got off.

Pretty cool until this happens
while the pilot touches down safely.

Lol no.
It is completely uneconomical and would only work with an entirely new plane itself instead of the planes flying today and would never work with the big planes as well. You would have to find some way to fit all those parachutes in the cabin that would float the cabin down while maximizing the profit of every seat there is and minimizing the weight gain and I just don't see how that would work.
Besides, flying is safer than driving and its not even close. And I love flying and I always try to do it if I'm going anywhere that's more than 4 hours driving distance.
The first and also the best flying memory I have is with my family decades ago for summer vacation, our first plane broke down and it was a long 737, they brought in a 767 which was substantially bigger, (Don't ask me why they went with that) it was a very light flight so flight attendants let us sit in first class, it was a 6 AM flight and I went back to sleep seeing the sunrise at 35,000 ft in the air.
