I have trouble sleeping on hotel pillows.
Messed up my neck the first night I was in the DR last month, and it was bothering me the rest of the trip.

I don't know why, but I started this about 4 years ago. All of a sudden I am more conscious of the cleanliness of hotels. Since then I rarely get a good night's sleep when we travel.
This. If it’s a roadside chain, I’m looking for one that’s newly constructed if possible.

What crap hotel does that? I’ve never stayed at one

6mg-10mg of Melatonin before going to bed should help.

My best sleep gets done in hotel rooms

I bring along a USB powered fan which greatly increases my chances of sleep. That fan has gone with me all over the place. Even a trans Atlantic cruise.

Lately, I can't sleep anywhere without waking up 4 or 5 times through the night.
Same. I am in for a rude awakening for the rest of my life.
Sleeping in a hotel for me is either the best sleep or the worst sleep ever.

Most of them have a limit on how low you can set the thermostat. You can hack some of them if you can find the same thermostat on the internet. I've done that a number of times. Even the Windsor Court in New Orleans has a set low temp. I used to call them ahead of time and tell them to take off the lock or whatever it is so I can adjust it myself. Then, I figured out how to do that myself.
I stayed in a very nice downtown hotel in Dallas some years ago in the heat of Summer. Floor to ceiling windows that got the direct afternoon and evening sun. The thermostat cut off when you left the room. It also cut off when there was not movement in the room for a period of time. It was misery. I tried to figure out how to beat it, but wasn't successful. I was exhausted after two nights in that place.

Same, traveld 3 weeks every month for years. Up all night tossing and turning. Did not matter if it was the 4seasons or motel 6.
Stayed in Detroit and woke up with a spider bite on my eye lid, managed to get on the plane and do dinner that night. Next day my eye was swollen closed and had to go to ER.
Now I only stay at major chains.

Best nights sleep ever in a hotel was in Philadelphia. Tenth floor room, no outside noise, lights of the FB stadium night game off in the distance.
The next day we were at a meeting away from our room and our AC caught fire. Other people on the floor saw the soot coming out from under our door. Soot on all our belongings.
Second nigth's rest in a different room was not as comfortable as we just couldn't seem to relax.

Only when I forget my fan, I have to have a fan to sleep.
I travel a lot for work and I have to have a fan too. Ive been using this little fan that I initially bought for my daughters stroller when we went to Disney last year but it’s small. I used to use a bigger tornado but since I fly most every time I travel, I switched to the smaller one. I say all that to ask….What fan are you using?

The first night are two I sleep fine. It’s the subsequent nights I have issues with. I have a memory foam bed at home that’s on the firmer side vs. the hotels beds that are softer and I think that’s playing into why I don’t sleep well after the first couple nights.

You can hack some of them
I have to have constant fan noise. That off/on bullshite is for the birds.
Some hotel units don't give you that option. I hack TF out of them.

Sometimes the first night.

This..my sleep in a hotel is directly related to how much I can crank the air.

I usually sleep better in hotels than anywhere else. That only applies when I’m solo—adding kids to a hotel room is why they made minibars.
Only time I remember not getting good sleep was doing hurricane restoration in Lake Chuck—after whatever storm hit there first in 2020. Anyway, our company had an entire Motel 6 under contract. No power so they had a huge generator out back running the place. We were working 16+ hours a day, so quality of accommodations wasn’t a huge deal, but they had some really shitty beds, and the floor stayed wet all the time. Eventually they moved us out of that shithole into one of the hotels near the casino. Once we got there, I slept like a baby every night—until we were evacuated for the next storm that was coming through.

I sleep great in hotels. Crank down the AC. Blackout curtains.

probably spent half of my adult life in hotels, no problems here

I used to bc the pillows are always trash. About a year ago I started bringing my own pillow and sleep much better. Also AC is set to 65.

That's why you have to specify when you check in. I always ask for a room that not near the elevator, a stairwell, ice/vending machines, a pool, conference rooms or anything else that is noisy. I generally try to get a room on the top level of the hotel if possible to avoid road noise or people walking on my head.
