Yes to the hobby. I've made a bunch of furniture. No to doing work for someone else for pay or otherwise.

Plenty of posters, but you may need to change boards. Give more info: What state/area? What are you looking for? Time frame?

Yes as a hobby, but I don't sell anything to the public. Learn to use pocket screws and you can do it too.

Another hobbyist. You don’t want me to build you anything.

Someone here may be able to answer this real quick.

Someone threw away a cool end table completely wooden. But dude probably left it outside for a long time. It looks like fence boards look after they get weathered for a few years.

Can I just sand it down stain it and urethane? Or has the rot made it a lost cause

If your pocket knife does not go easily into the wood it might still be good. And yes, you can sand and refinish.

That’s a big “if” on rot! Assuming its not particle board and there is structural wood to work with, throw some 220 grit sandpaper on a palm sander and see what happens. Maybe 400 if you want to go a little slower. I just refinished something similar and repaired a broken leg that the prior owner thought was unrepairable. It’s not hard to do usually. Good luck!

As someone who moved into a house in which the previous owner built a lot of the patio furniture and left it behind, please don’t use common lumber and then not water seal it. Everything is rotting. EVERYTHING

Also, there is a good 80% chance that anyone you know’s pee-paw can do this for you. We all become carpenters after retirement to get away from our wives.

Grown men shouldn't have hobbies according to some on the OT.

I built myself a CD cabinet that hung on the wall.
I never stained it or sealed it. I liked the raw wood.

Sanding it to a smooth surface was probably the best part.

I've done some work for other people in the past and it just isn't as rewarding and I find I don't care about the project as much.

Currently building a dresser which is the last piece of our bedroom furniture.

Will eventually match the rest of the set.

I can do it in theory but the problem with most carpentry types is that they have more personal projects than they can ever finish and the buyer will never want to pay what something is actually worth

The over $20K worth of specialty woodworking tools in my shop says I do but my motivation to actually build stuff right now after building all the interior doors and cabinets in my house says otherwise.

I have a pretty complete woodworking shop set up and have been making sawdust for over 40 years. That's typically my biggest export..... sawdust :)

That's where I'm at for the time being----besides, my shop has no a/c and it's hot as hell inside it this time of year.

Probably over $30K in tools and accessories with many of the accessories out-costing the actual tool itself. I know I have WAY more money tied up in 1/2" shank router bits than I do in all 3 of the routers I have.

Yes, I have built dinning tables, Church pews (For porches), end tables, coffee tables, beds, storage cabinets, Mud room cabinet, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, and on and on.

I will do things for family and friends but not to make money, as the time is not worth the money you get from it IMO...

I do love doing it as a hobby though..

FYI: Like someone else said: Get a Kreg jig and you can almost anything on your own..

I definitely work my wood.

I do it both as a hobby and i would say that I’m pretty much a professional at this point
