Likely that video was not pirates, it was smugglers. Very, very common in the Gulf.

Pirates of the Caribbean was one of my favorite rides at Disney when I was a kid.

One of our sandbar friends and his wife took an old cabin cruiser from Bay St Louis to the Bahamas to Canada and back. He said twice boats began to approach him in open water and he stood on the front of the boat with a shotgun. He isn't sure what their intentions were but both times they turned around before they were close enough for it to get dicey.

Back in the early '80s there were stories about a lot of friction between the Cajun shrimpers and oysterman and the newly arrived Vietnamese encroaching on their territories. Was that really a thing or were the stories exaggerated by the time they crossed I-20?

Went on one of those Pirate Tours when the kids were little and was ready to cut off my left leg and get a wooden one by the end of the trip. It was pretty fun.

Your buddy didn’t run into any pirates between bay St. Louis and Canada. Maybe a boat or two of Cuban migrants or drug runners

No. I keep my yacht in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean Seas and avoid places like the Red Sea or South China Sea where pirates are a problem.

ETA: Northern Mediterranean Sea. I make sure my captain knows to stay far away from Libya and Syria.

Those do not get repeated, he did adopt one our early conversations as his own. Good for him, still sold advice to young folks of any era.

Captain Ron. Great movie that doesn't get enough credit.

I read that there was a ship that changed the fire suppression hoses to mix the hot turbine water with the cold water and had hoses that would shoot out 190* water. That would probably deter one of those little boats. I cant imagine getting hit with near boiling water and having the flesh stripped off.

They also had solid concrete blocks they would use to drop onto the pirates or into their crappy wooden boats causing them to sink.

Early 20s Ike walked into a bathroom stall at a bar in Cincy. As the door opened, I saw a Captian Morgan impersonator rise up from tooting a fat rail with a look of disgust.
