honestly unless you're buying land and learning to farm crops, raise livestock, and truly live off the grid you're just wasting your time.

Just prep as you would for an extended hurricane outage. We have plenty of water, we would fill the tub if we could, ive got 2 totes of dry goods and cans and a full shelf as well that we regularly eat from and restock.
If there's any real doomsday like long term civil war, the grid being destroyed, water plants destroyed, mass nuclear attack, etc then dont even prep for those scenarios. You'd be doomed, and even if you survive, youre gonna both see and have to do some horrific things.

They have a good plan and when its baked into your culture like it is theirs, its incredibly cheap and unintrusive to day to day living. It includes the most critical aspect that everyone overlooks in long term prepping - community.

I remember this was a big deal before 2000 when the machines were supposed go haywire at the millennium.
Some people bought enough plastic bottled water to make a small lake. Stored in a hot garage it went foul pretty quickly. Please buy glass bottled water for emergencies.

This is my thinking. If something happened where grid went down for couple weeks we're ready. Nuclear/civil war stuff; no one is gonna be ready.
We have an extra small pantry we rotate food and few months of those freeze dried food buckets that I just through in the back of a closet. Gravity fed water filter (have a pond) and a small battery generator with a solar panel. You, and I have done it, think you're prepared for some crazy stuff but in reality I doubt it.
We do have a friend with lot of acres in the middle of now where that our close friends have said if it hits the fan we're going there. I'm sure by the time that came to fruition it would be too late.

Anyone doing this last for a few days to maybe a month tops. Most likely, you will die the first time you try to invade the space of someone who knows it well.

Yeah once you face that stark reality, it takes some stress off being a husband and father and feeling the need to be prepared for it. All the extreme and extra stuff bumps your odds by just a hair n thats it. I think the most "extreme" thing i have is the straws that filter water, and bullets i suppose lol

Even though I have a Well, and enough food to last me a couple months, since I am 84 years old, I can't fool myself into believing I would survive more than about a week. If the Grid went down.

Within the first 2 months, anyone thinking they will be "raiders" would likely die. There would be too many "military" wannabe groups, led by ex-military and LEOs and they would come into conflict. Also most "raiders" would be urban criminal elements.
The military type groups seem to be popular, but the bulk of them would not last long either. They would run through their supplies quickly. Just building visible fortifications bring unwanted attention and conflict. These groups are where any semblance of new government would come from, but it would bring almost constant conflict.
Extended family structure is a very good way to survive if you are out of the way. Main issue with these groups is the lack of trust to outsiders. This causes failure of the group since you need other skills. If that mistrust can be overcome, this group could survive and stay out of conflict until one of the military style groups establishes something real. That would take time.
For firearms - many tend to think you need alot. Each person needs, at most, 1. A .22 caliber is most likely the best. With little to no medical supplies, 22 wounds are lethal and you can carry hundreds of rounds in your coat pocket. What is best is that you can truly suppress a 22. With no ambient noise, like cars and such, rifle reports carry very far. A military weapon brings attention both visually and from the report of firing it. Unless you have a supply chain, you can only carry minimal ammo. Gray Manning it is what you want to do. Never try to stand out. Never make it look like you have something worth taking.
