I work for a permanent in house contractor and my crew has been in Ammonia 4 since early January. This turnaround has been hell on wheels.
Ammonia 3 went down this weekend and we're hearing rumors that we may go straight into that unit once 4 is up and running. Loving the OT checks but my God I'd love a day off

I have a Co worker who's been applying for operations at a bunch of plants in the area and apparently CF is on a hiring freeze right now. I would check back with your neighbor in a few months and re apply

Most plants use Laworks.net for the application process. Shintech will be hiring 30+ in the next couple of months for their Ethylene unit. They just stopped their pension but still offer retirement insurance.
I'd say apply everywhere, even the graveyards like Rubicon, Westlake. They are like your starter homes. The plants will be up and down so much you will get a lot of experience in a short amount of time.
Be ready for offers all across the board. I have turned down ExxonMobil 4 times because they start everyone no matter the experience at about $24/hr. My current plant just hired a few new people and they started them anywhere from $30-38/hr. My best advice is that with operations it's not all about the money. I started in a VCM unit which is a very hard working and terrible unit for your health. But, I turned that experience into a pay raise and a very clean and good running Methanol process. Plants like Rubicon, Oxy, and some others may pay very well but it's really just life expectancy pay. If you want to be in the plants, get in a good process and learn to live within your means.

The methanol unit isn't that far away from the VCM unit (really close to VCM-A, but I doubt that will ever run again (if it is running that is cool as shite). Not to mention your site will shutdown again if natural gas prices every rise like they did in the early 2000's.
*edited VCM-A for VCM-E

Not sure if you're talking about Dow's old VCM units or not, but I don't work for them. I work for a stand alone Methanol unit/company. Gas prices are forecast to be low for decades, and we are the world's largest supplier. With more foreign countries as well as maritime applications coming on board for fueling alternatives the methanol market outlook is bright.

Ah, thought you were at the old BCP, now Westlake site across the street. In their old methanol plant.
I was laid off from there after natural gas prices spiked back then. As was everyone else. Methanol plant was the only thing making money until then. shite happened overnight it seems.

We have a few older guys from their Methanol plant. We are almost right across the street from Westlake. That is a small VCM unit, think they are in the 1-2 million lbs/day range. I worked in a 5 million lbs/day.

Do any folks ever get into the plants with snubbing/work over experience or not so much?

You do realize the government basically forces us to do this? And South is exactly right in his post above yours. See it all the time, fortunately they don't last long anymore.

What the hell is a plant operator anyway? Do they get to wear those onesies jumpsuits and boots too?

Port Allen won't be Shell for too much longer.
Don't limit yourself to an operator. Just try to get any position and then prove your worth. Make it known that you want to move up and bust your arse to back it up

Hey, what's your thoughts between Shell/Motiva Norco, ExxonMobil and Rubicon?

New accounts bumping old threads is apparently becoming an epidemic

Go with Shell out of those 3.

Thanks, that's the one I was leaning towards!!

I talked a lot in this thread when it was first started. Laughed because someone mentioned working at Almatis as a joke and that’s where I’m at now . After 4 years of working on a dock that’s all I was able to pull. Hopefully will leapfrog that into something better eventually.
