Why are they called plants?
This is a tough question to answer, because the two have become largely synonymous in the general vernacular. It is important to note though, that “plant” in this sense is short for Plantation!
The word factory generally refers to a production site where a specific item is produced, whereas a plant refers to a site where a specific process takes place. For example, a site that produces brushes could be called a brush factory, but you wouldn’t call it a brush plant. On the flip side, a site that produces electricity would be called a power plant, but you wouldn’t call it a power factory.
If you want to really get froggy, then you can also consider the words mill (as in lumber mill or steel mill), house (as in clearinghouse), yard (junkyard, shipyard), etc.

Seems to be the norm as of late. Have interviewed several ppl and recommended them but minorities with no experience got the job offer over the experienced individual.
Edt: I believe in diversity, just not forced diversity.

Been busy so couldn't keep up with the thread. With my luck if I started to get my PTEC degree I'd get hired somewhere in the middle of it. It probably wouldn't take me long at all though because I'd already have a shite ton of credits transfer.

It helps you get rehired if you ever get laid off. Or ever want to switch companies.

I probably know you. I know most of operators in 3 and 4. Thing that's throwing me off is it's the same operators that run both units

False, they want the PTEC or experienced folks. BS will still get you an interview but it isn't what they target. BTW, the washout rate on PTEC interns is higher than you'd expect....most don't want to do shite. They think when they start they'll run a board like they show them at school. Heard the PTEC requirement may soon go away and just be a "preferred" thing.

It would be worth it. You hear of a lot more jobs at the school with everyone talking about them. Also like someone else said, you will get opportunities for internships that they offer to Ptec students that usually lead to full time jobs. I know Shell norco says that their internship won't lead to a full-time spot, but they have hired from them in the past. I also started at my first plant as an intern. They came to the school and asked for 20 or so students to interview. The head guy that used to work at that plant put me on the list, I got the spot, and a few months later I was a full-time operator. The connections alone are worth going to the school. I was also working full-time at another job outside of the industry while going to school, so it can be done with night classes. I transferred over all of the academic courses and just had to knock out the process courses.

Any of y'all know of any schools doing the fast track soon? I called Sowela in Lake Charles and they said they aren't doing it again until next spring.

What unit you work in? I know a few people over there.
How's that new ammonia unit running

Good to know. I'd likely just need the process courses as well. I'd def be missing some classes though due to shift work.

If you talk to your instructors and let them know you work for a contractor they won't care how many days you miss. Just pass your test/exams and you're golden.

I heard that from a supervisor at the Taft/Hahnville plant that is involved in hiring. Said the same thing you said about the ptec grads. I think they're focusing too much on interview skills (bullshitting skills) and not enough on what the people have learned in school.
If they would ask less "tell me about a time" questions and more technical questions their results would change drastically.
They had 4 guys get at Dow from my ptec class and all 4 were the type that would stand around looking at their phone while I was tracing lines and trying to learn in the hands on training unit.

When I graduated two years ago, Dow was plucking out mostly female minorities that couldn't speak plain English, couldn't climb a structure, couldn't open a flange, and had a C average. They the had the nerve to complain to the school about the low quality of interns that the school was putting out. People I knew at the plant said that the HR woman who was there at the time was ignoring the wishes of the unit supervisors when it came to hiring decisions.
