It was a real particular problem that presented a safety issue. Related to how our tankermen and surveyors gained access to a barge.

Our sup had some modifications made to a part of our dock without knowing how it would impact the day to day operations out there. And of course he didn't consult any of us prior to this. Without going into a ton of detail I happened to be the guinea pig out there when we needed to first use this transfer spot post-modification. I didn't like how it looked (which I already knew would be a problem) but I went through the motions anyway because I had to.
Once we got to the part where the guy needed to get on I shut everything down.

There was a different and safe plan in place once I returned the following night. There's a lot of problems like this where I'm at . It's one of the main reasons I want out.

Not true at all. 10 years ago maybe but today plants are completely different. Even Exxon has gotten away from this and they were the worst about hiring legacies and good
ole' boys.

Not one person in my hiring class of 20 knew someone at my plant. Only a few even lived in the parish.

I know the PTEC seems like a waste of time but it will really help you. In my hiring class, the only people without PTEC or operations experience were military. Most of the teachers in reserve are old industry guys and if you let them know up front you work shift work they will be ok with you missing a class here and there. We also hired on a few guys from SGS, so working with them or Savage or any other operation contractor does help. The plant will still train you how they want you to work and the equipment at the school is a joke compared to in the plant, but they still want to know you don't have to be reminded to breathe.

3 ways to get hired as an operator:

1. Know someone high up
2. Don't be white
3. Don't be a male

I've been trying like hell to get on somewhere with no luck. 2 years experience as a barge/ship loader and I have a B.S. degree. Applied at CF and went through 2 interviews, grew up with one of the superintendents there as my neighbor. Still didn't get the job. Meanwhile they're hiring idiots left and right who aren't qualified because they're a minority and they have to fill quotas. Then they have to turn around and fire them because they either don't show up for work or they aren't smart enough to learn the shite. Yeah, I'm bitter,

Get a PTEC degree and you can land an internship with a plant. You can roll that into a full time Ops gig. That's what I did.

Plants love that effing PTEC degree. I have a BS degree, but the PTEC is what got me on in Ops at a plant.

Having a PTEC degree will help a lot. At my plant you have to have PTEC or 5 years experience somewhere else. Not all plants require that but having that degree even if it's not required is a big bonus

Most plants are hiring. Baby Boomers are retiring at a fast rate. P-tech certificates are needed for most plants. Can be obtained at a trade school. My plant will have 30% of it's workforce retire within the next 5 years. Myself included. Lots of plants can have you making 6 figures within 5 years with a little bit of overtime put in. Well worth getting the certificate.

My plant (Cornerstone Chemical) will not hire without a P-tech certificate. PERIOD.

Just be patient. A buddy of mine took the Exxon test, had two interviews, and two years later was hired.

If you're self driven, professional, and don't mind busting arse go work at a shitty place for a year or two. Learn things and the lingo. Then you will have a selling point for yourself, or, you can advance to where you practically run the shitty place.

I work at CF in Ammonia 4 and there is only 1 black operator during the day shift. All the others are white males.

Can't speak for all the other units but even in Ammonia 3 I've only seen 1 black operator

Is this company hiring still? I'm working offshore right now and have been looking for that foot in the door on land myself. Hell I live inDestrehan so that's an easy gig.

I have to call bs on 90k working for sgs. My buddy that works for them at CF and he said they are one of the highest paid locations around. He said top pay is 26/ hour. Even with OT he only cleared about 60k

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. I'm a tankerman for another shoreside company similar to SGS pulling in 90k a year. I have been in this business going on 6 years and we have guys making 150k working a couple days off...

Yes. Most plants have financial analyst positions (doing some accounting and a lot of analysis) and some (usually not the big ones because they do their accounting over seas or at a corporate office) have accounting positions.

Project controls is also a possibility with finance/accounting. There is usually several cost analysts that track/forecast capital spending and separate ones that track turnaround spending.
