A buddy of mine is an operator at Exxon. His dad and grandfather both worked there so he had an "in". He would talk about the classes he had to take after being hired and how they pushed through some of the people despite them not knowing the material simply because they were a minority or female.

I'm not trying to sound sexist or racist, but every day I go to work I put my life in other people's hands and vice versa. I want those people to know what the frick they're doing. These chemical plants aren't a joke. Hire people who are deserving and capable, that's all I'd like.

Why don't you go work the docks or be a boilermaker for a year or two? I have plenty buddies who got in that way.

Also, I know people that made 90k working the docks for SGS on a 2-3 schedule last year. That's not a bad life.

This is pretty dead on. You'd be surprised at the people who just don't show up to work, or just simply can't understand the simple concept of upstream and downstream.

I have to call bs on 90k working for sgs. My buddy that works for them at CF and he said they are one of the highest paid locations around. He said top pay is 26/ hour. Even with OT he only cleared about 60k

We use SGS as a tankerman service on our dock right now. I talk to those guys a lot about their company and they're actually losing people because they're fricking over their on call guys by converting a lot of their off time to on call time so they basically have no personal time. 90k ain't bad and OT ain't bad either, I just would rather that OT as an operator . We'll see, I'm applying for everything I can right now so it's not for lack of trying.

I can vouch for this. My company hires at a 2:1 ratio. wont go into any detail as I don't really feel like being banned...

That's as a loader though. 90k is for on call tankerman or dockmen. The guys who are assigned to an area and get dispatched to work barge transfers.

3 ways to get hired as an operator:

1. Know someone high up
2. Don't be white
3. Don't be a male

I'm an operator in a chemical plant and don't really find this to be true. Yes they do have some minorities/women that definitely seem to have gotten hired based on their gender/ethnicity but there's not too many. There's less than 10 female operators in my plant.

Yeah I could've been a lot more colorful with my explanation. But I'm aware that it is indeed policy to hire certain people and hold them.

I also call BS on 90k as a Tankerman/Loader/Dock Operator

An operator at my plant now was a Dock Operator for SGS at Valero a few years ago and made $19 an hour.

Bingo

They don't want to hire you, spend tons of money training you, then you move on to something better.

They either want someone who has been an operator for a decade or longer, or they want a rookie Ptech to train up.

Or you asked for too much money.

Probably a little bit of both.

SGS employees at Valero are killing it and are almost a shoe in to get hired on as Operators as their tank field has a high turnover/retire rate.

I think we're hiring operators at our facility...you'd have to be willing to relocate to Houston though.

Large midstream company in liquid pipeline operations. Union gig though...so frick that noise.

They do that to dumb white guys too.

Truth of the matter, women and minorities have a spotlight on them out there. Any frickup they make is because they are a woman or minority. A white guy makes a mistake and it is just another operations mistake.

I can confirm this. I start with SGS on Monday as a loader at Valero in Norco.

I know for a fact Dow has been looking for Operators with a 4 year degree but it has to be something relevant like engineering, industrial technology or chemistry

Not true at all depending on the location. Getting qualified people for middle management is proving to be tough.

If you call BS on 90k as an SGS tankerman you just don't know the business. Their top guys make 34/hr if not more. Consistently pulling ~60 hr work weeks. Gets to the point where they turn jobs down because they don't need the money.

All that being said it takes a special person to sit on a barge in the elements in south Louisiana for 14 hours in the summer where the heat kills you during the day and the mosquitoes frick you up at night. They can have that shite .

Oh and about the degree, you may be right about what they perceive my intentions to be, but it couldn't be further from the truth. Regardless though, you'd think they'd want someone already educated and capable of learning to step into the plant and pick things up quick. Time spent training is a continuous headache when you hire dumbass after dumbass.

Congrats. Great way to get your foot in the door if you want to be an Operator some day.

Combine a couple years of that with Ptec and you'll get hired before you graduate
