My tip from last year was I just went on ebay and searched for lots of the holo cards or full arts or whatever. I'm sure they were knockoffs but he can't tell and his friends don't actually play the card game just collect the cards.

This is dumb as frick. The whole reason to buy the things is to collect and keep as an investment. You know those cards can be worth thousands in 10-20 years if it’s a rare card? Why support Chinese knockoff retailers?

What does the grading do? Is it like a rare baseball card?

Grading means you get a company to say the card is real and to assess its condition. Cards are basically worthless if you bend them, put them in a binder (will bend cards, Knick edges). It doesn’t take much to damage a card and reduce its value a ton

Have you watched baseball? It's boring.

I occasionally buy MtG cards not because I play (anymore) but that I really enjoy the art. Have a couple thousand cards at least, spanning from the early 90s til today. It's my most guilty pleasure.

I found a box of cards on Amazon a few weeks ago for my sons birthday.

They weren’t that much. I think 40 bucks for 150 cards. Something like that.
