One of my friends do. I've wanted to murder the rooster many times.

Back in the past, I had 10 Plymouth barred rocks and a rooster but got tired of them and gave them away.

My mom has some. It works out great, she deals with the nasty bastards and we get fresh eggs.

Seriously though, they're okay if you are set up for it. They are like a garbage disposal. They eat leftovers as much as they eat hen scratch.

Roosters do but hens don't really.

Chickens are very simple to raise. Have them a coop to roost in, boxes to lay in... and a run (dog kennels are easiest to get this done) I would have wire mesh over the top to keep out coons, owls, opossum at night. After they have been in the pen a week or so you can let them out during they day... they will always return to their roost at night. Shut gate at dark. Feed them laying pellets, as well as left over veggies and fruits. They lay eggs pretty much every day, so keep those picked up and fresh water about once or so a week.

There was a thread a few months ago that was pages long with lots of info. Might have been on outdoor board. Lots of pics of peoples coops.

I used to raise 9 hens and a rooster. Mostly Rhode Island Reds. I would suggest those if you were to raise them. I also had some White Leghorns that are egg laying machines. I had a few other breeds but the RIR cant be beat.

lol.hate my reds. They are mean.. I like the buff oprhingtons. Also if you want something fun get a couple ameraucana hens. They will lay blue, greem, or pink eggs.

You know why a chicken coop only has 2 doors?

If it had 4 doors it'd be a chicken sedan

I remember my Grandmother having chickens. When I was 5 or so they had one rooster that would torment me. I dreaded going over because it would chase me to the door. Well it spurred me and she saw it. She grabbed him by the neck and swung him around killing him. I remember looking at her thinking that is the coolest thing i've ever seen. It was like super hero cool to my little 5 year old brain.

When you get yourself some chickens to raise and later on you decide to add to your flock, always remember that chickens are very territorial especially when they are cooped up. If you add any new chickens to the coop, the existing ones will attack the newer ones (pecking order). I built a little side coop (new chickens) to my main coop to help with the transition. I let the new chickens stay in sight of the older ones for a couple of weeks, that way the older ones got use to seeing them. Whenever I let the newer ones into the main coop the older ones didn't give them too much of a hard time.

If you have enough space to let them roam, hens are mildly entertaining animals to watch from your porch.

If you find yourself in an enclosure with a rooster, you are the entertainment.

Tried once.

Live out in the boonies, too many predators.

Frickers were too nervous to lay eggs.
