I've thought about it 100 times.

Just, in the end, we already get fresh yard eggs from a friend for $3/dozen, so it doesn't seem like it would be worth the hassle to have my own.

If you feed them the right amount of bullshite, they will eventually start the most awesome internet community. Just don’t trash Hillary Clinton, they might turn on you.

I did. I free ranged mine in my fenced back yard. Put them up at night. A fox came and killed every one of them. I was pissed.

my boss had some and her dogs terrorized them She got exactly one egg out of all 3 of them. She said that the dogs play with them like they were plush toys. One dog pinned down a hen and plucked out all of her feathers and later killed her from playing too rough

My FIL had quite a few. They made a mess, walked around his yard, would sit and shite on odd things.

Pretty sure a hawk picked them all off and he doesn't have any anymore. There was an a-hole one that I used to throw rocks at. That mofo would try to square you up if you were around it.

I tried that with a young New Hampshire rooster and those old hens nearly killed the fricker before I could get to him.

during the summer my 5 hens put out 25-30 eggs in a week. But only 8-10 during winter months. Had them for a year. let them free range during the day, and i live out in the sticks. Shut gate at night and have wire mesh over the top. Nothing has got them yet.

Here's some advice.....unless you are looking to make more chickens don't get a fricking rooster.

i disagree.. But to each their own. I enjoy hearing rooster crow. They are fun to watch, they look over the flock. Watch for hawks, and gather up hens when there in danger. They find treats (insects) for their hens. Pretty good entertainment.

Got Rhode Island Reds. Six Hens. They are pretty hardy in these NEOhio winters. I don't even heat the coop. Just heat the water so it doesn't freeze.
Beware of coons.

I live in the boonies where bobcats will decimate a flock. I had to keep mine protected in a coop, they couldn't free range because of the fricking bobcats.

Watching a hen jog across the yard is one of the funniest things you will witness in life.

I have 4. One RIR, one buff orpington, and two wyandotes.

We got them in mid June when they were about 4 weeks old.

I want to add 2 more chickens to the flock. The last few weeks we have been getting almost 4 eggs a day out of them.

They are very entertaining. And our RIR is the friendliest. The buff is the least.

If it had 5, it would be called a “hatch”back.
