No lineman here in tOT. We're all C-suite billionaires.

Get ready for him to come home with something like this.

One of my best friends is/was a lineman. He's done well for himself.
Worked a shite ton of hours in his 20s and 30s to get there. He pulled down close to 250k in some of his best years. He told me could've moved out to Cali to rebuild infrastructure after the fires and really made bank. He took a paycut and moved up to management after he had kids though.
If your boy isn't afraid to work he can set himself up for a comfortable life.

Pros: you will always have a job and good benefits and salary will keep going up
Cons: outside in shitty conditions all day and decent chance of injury

Wife's cousin started after high school. Worked his arse off with hurricane recovery and even went to Puerto Rico (said the natives slowed the recovery by stealing everything).
Bought a farm at 30yrs old, bought a surplus bucket truck and started a tree service (showed me photos of a black walnut, he sold the wood for thousands) set up some of his employees in the firewood business). He has done well.

One of my closest friends from HS is a lineman.
He is the type of person I pray is a lineman. Smart. Level-headed. Confident. And could probably be anything he wants to be.
He makes a good amount of money. With OT he's well over 100k.
But that OT is something, now. When there's a bad storm, he has to leave home a few days. He has to be on call all weekend every month. He does get to work 4 10s, so when it's not a call weekend, he does well and enjoys himself.
However he has his phone on him, and I'd say half of our interactions, even on non call weekends, his boss is calling him asking if he wants OT. Most of the time it's a yes.
From what I have seen, and from what he has told me, it's a really solid career that challenges him, gives him a livable wage, but also allows him to leave work at work.

While he's so young, it's always worth it even if for just the experience factor. If for whatever reason it's not for him because of working in the elements, heights, any potential travel etc, but he enjoys and understands the technical side of it, the experience will almost surely get him into an electrician apprenticeship or other trade related positions. If a worthwhile college degree isn't in the cards for my kids, that's the route I would suggest for them.
Worst case scenario is he finds something he doesn't want to do early in his working life. Best case, he finds a career he loves with decades ahead of him.

Fletcher in Houma has a lineman program that is very good for getting his foot in the door. My son (22) has several friends that went through it and are making damn good money. Most of them for powering construction companies and not your Utilty, Entergy, Sleca, CLECO.

It's not bad. You have a bit less scrutiny from the fan base at large because they mostly focus on the quarterback and skill players. And you have a bit more longevity, plus your teammates know the game is won in the trenches, with the hogs, so you get respect.
