South LA… don’t know anything about it, but we have a contact for him from MS Power.
Pros/cons from those of you in the field?
ETA: what are things it can transfer to down the road when he’s older?

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searching in the sun for another overload

Utilities companies can be difficult to get into unless you know someone so having a connection is very important. Skillset is directly transferable to work with fiber optic companies, either residential like AT&T or commercial putting in lines in new construction.

Dammit. Now I'll be singing this song for the next few days. Thankfully it's one of my favorites...

My cousin who lives in the St Rose area started right after high school with training and what not. He’s now 23 or 25 and just bought his first house. I’d say he did well for himself so far.

shite. I thought you were asking about him playing football in college.
I was hoping he was a huge baw and wanted to go to LSU.

My ex's family was full of Entergy line guys. They made great money, but rarely saw them on holidays.
They were always on call and traveling out of state for ice storms.

Probably like a lot of the other trades, you can make good money but you're going to work overtime for it.

Two sons of a family friend recently graduated from Northwest Lineman College and went right to work
They are both in their mid/younger 20's and make crazy money, but they stay gone a lot.

Been around linemen my whole life growing up. Have friends from HS that did that. Bottom line is that it's a good living, sometimes long hours, especially during storms. Obviously risky dealing with electricity, have to be careful. Pay is decent, work outdoors, usually good people to work with for most part. Mom and Dad both worked for WST Electric in Franklinton and retired from there.

My nephew dropped out of LSU after a year and caught on with a company that contracted for Entergy (knew a guy). He now works for Entergy. 23 and just bought his first house. He does work off a lot. I think he spent 3 weeks in Mississippi after a round of tornados. He missed our family vacation this summer because he had to travel somewhere.

Hope he’s ready for his girl back at home to cheat on him.

Working storm related disasters is good money but hard work for sure
Be ready for a lot of conditions to work in
Hot cold etc
I don’t know how the older people do it
Hazardous conditions at times

Two of my uncles retired from BellSouth. Both spent a ton of time outside in the sun, but made good money doing it.
One retired and didn't want anything to do with twisted pair or fiber ever again. The other retired and moved to Orlando and ended up pulling/terminating Cat5 in hotels/condos that were being built there in the early 2000s and made a fairly comfortable post retirement income.
