As part of my collection I own a lumed number, Explorer I. It is easily my favorite Rolex. It is an under the radar, tough as nails, tool watch. An additional upside is it will hold or increase in value.

Explorer I is also a great substitute for a Datejust, unless you require a date.

ETA: I own a Tudor that is very similar (Black Bay 36), it’s my favorite watch, from an aesthetic perspective.

I would tell you to consider the plain SS bezel if you are going with the polished center link oyster bracelet (my preferred combo on that watch), but this is purely opinion.

Just saw this part of your message. You like the oyster bracelet better than the jubilee on a DJ? I can see how the fluted bezel and jubilee makes it look more dressy, but I was wondering if that was why you prefer the oyster

Good luck getting a Pepsi or Batman for retail price.

The last few that I've seen in pawn shops have been marked up significantly over retail.

I certainly do, especially if we're talking about the DJ 41.

I have always loved the Rolex datejust. Just a classic look to it. The Omega would be a close second on my list

Of the three brands, all of which I own, I would pick the Rolex as the first. I have however never owned a DJ simply because for me it tries too hard to be both a dress and a sport watch, though that may appeal to some. It appears from your examples you want something slightly on the dress side without an external rotating bezel. I am partial to both the Oyster Perpetual (available in multiple colored dials) and the Milgauss also in multiple colors. Since you showed blue dial watches I will as well.

Both are relatively simple, the lack of date makes them easy to pick up/set and roll if you don't wear them daily. They also don't have a cyclops which I don't like but endure on some of my Rolex watches.

I think both wear on the average-sized wrist better than the DJII which starts to be a little large for a "dressy" watch.

In the end, buy what you love and don't get too stuck on the value retention, which Rolex is king, since most people don't sell their first nice watch.

Man, my dream watch at the moment is no doubt a Omega Speedmaster. I’m pretty frugal, but I’ll definitely own one of these in the next couple years, but probably with a leather or nylon band over the bracelet.

Thoughts on the Explorer II? I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on one.

they're nice but need to like orange. I think all of the suggestions are good. The IWC with white face and blue accents a page or so back was super nice looking.

I do prefer the Oyster Bracelet.

Primarily as a matter of taste or opinion, you could say I think the modern Oyster Bracelet is the best watch bracelet there is, and I have some good ones to compare it to. I have a friend that thinks the same about the Jubilee. The OB with polished links works fine dressed up or down if you ask me. And there is nothing wrong with either the Jubilee bracelet or the fluted bezel, but to me, for a Date Just, I'm not inclined to mix the two, ie fluted goes with jubilee and smooth w/ oyster.

As Obtuse posted above, the Oyster Perpetual is a great choice if you don't want or need a date window. Flies under the radar a bit more, there is a 39 mm version available which is a big plus, a number of dial color variants and oyster bracelet is all brushed - less formal if you ask me.

I have this trio as part of my collection, and of this group, I wear the Explorer I the most.

sorry about the lighting, I know it is terrible but that's a blue dial DJ II w/ smooth SS bezel

Thoughts on the Explorer II

I have some...great watch, In my opinion I would find a carefully curated 16570 - the older version (pre 2011), smaller 40 mm case (as opposed to 42 mm on current 216570), slimmer lugs, slimmer hands, smaller markers and red 24 hour hand. It is a great rugged watch, and if you like bigger watches, and the Rolex super case with the maxi dial, then the newer version is great. Also, the demand is not crazy, so chances you can find one pretty easy from a dealer.

No offense, but these threads are always silly. You are the one that is going to be wearing the watch, so get the one you like the best and don't worry about the opinion of others. They are going to be a varied as the number of watches available. From a practical stand point a $30 timex is going to keep time just as well as a $70k Patek. Presumably you are buying a luxury watch as a treat to yourself. Don't spend that kind of money on a watch you don't love simply because it's not popular with other people.

But since you ask, I would go with something that is considered a "classic". Something that always remains in style. Consider the Rolex datejust or Submariner. Yes, millions of people have them, but that because they have stood the test of time. Another is the Omega "moonwatch" (even though I prefer the look of the Aqua Terra). There are other brands that those who aren't into watches won't know, but that all watch nerds do (mostly swiss makers).

But again, get the one YOU like.

I am a fan of the Exp II, I am one of the few that doesn't really care for the Exp I in either size. I have had a 216570 "Polar" for a while and it is one of the watches I have that I am usually reticent to take off and switch to the next watch in rotation which happens to be a white gold Classique 5247 Chronographe so not exactly a step-down. The Explorer II is a great watch and an excellent travel watch.

I've been thinking about the OPs post as I ran around doing errands today. There are a lot of great mid-tier brands like Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, IWC, JLC etc but in general Rolex, Omega and Grand Seiko are the ones that get the most ink on watch forums. As far as movement quality thay are all very similar with the newest Rolex and Omega being a touch better than the GS and I actually like the current Omega movements better than the current Rolex movements.

If you told me I had to pick one watch and wear it everyday for the rest of my life it would be a Rolex, specifically 116600 Sea-Dweller 4000. It is the last generation 40mm with no Cyclops. This is coming from a guy that owns multiples of all three of the Swiss Trinity (Vacheron, AP and Patek). There is something very special about a Rolex and has little to do with the brand value/perception. Practically every watch they make has a timeless design they they do make the occasional gaudy design such as the rainbow Dayton (picture below). Their movements are all inhouse and only exceeded by Seiko on this point (Seiko even produces the ink used to print their manuals). They make movements that simply work, day in and day out and finding someone to work on a Rolex is easy. The most recent Rolex accuracy standards eclipse just about everything in the marketplace save Omega (Metas) and Patek (Patek Seal)depending on what metrics you place the most value on. Rolex, however, does have fairly utilitarian finish on their movements, but the caseback is solid. Omega and GS exceed them here and provide display backs on (most of) their watches so you get a glimpse of the movement.

Most every watch nut will own a Rolex at some point if they can and will afford one unless they are a contrarian. In the end, you simply can't go wrong choosing a Rolex that said especially if you choose one of the in-demand steel watches you can buy a very nice 3 watch rotation with the money.

All that said buy what YOU like. But remember at these price points you should be buying a watch that feels special every time you put it on and brings an internal (or external) smile to your face each time you check the time. You know you have the right watch when you often look at your wrist just to admire the watch and have to look back a second later because you forgot to notice the time.

ETA I forgot to add the rainbow Daytona pic

I looked at the Professional and the First Omega in Space last week.

I liked the FOIS more, the smaller case size looked better on my wrist. It does look dressier though, and less sporty.

Datejust is a classic.

Stainless/white gold jubilee bracelet grey/silver face. Not too dressy and not too casual.

Early 80s vintage w/ hash marks vs numbers is what mine is, it has and will always be my favorite in the collection.

Those vintage only came with poly crystal, but they make a sapphire one that will fit. Had mine changed to sapphire after replacing three poly ones. Not a genuine Rolex part but it’s a daily wearer and a relatively inexpensive model.

I love my speedy, but I didn’t buy it on bracelet. Wish I had it, super expensive to get after the fact.
