I know a lot of it is preference, but what would you watch aficionados recommend to someone looking for their first luxury watch?

Rolex Datejust

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra

IWC Portuguese

Something completely different?

Buy a Tudor and pocket the money you would’ve spent on a Rolex. I sold a Rolex 2 years ago and purchased 2 Tudor’s and put $1500 in my savings

An option that doesn't get talked about enough is Grand Seiko. And since you're posting blue dials.

Are you buying new or secondary market, and if new, Gray or Authorized Dealer? I have watches of all of those brands, and my rec out of that group is the DJ. I can't tell from that pic if that is a 36 or 41 mm because of it being close up. I would tell you to consider the plain SS bezel if you are going with the polished center link oyster bracelet (my preferred combo on that watch), but this is purely opinion.

This may not be popular around here, but I feel Omega's qc has declined as of late. That particular IWC is nice, but not as versatile as either of the other two you picture, in my opinion.

Both the Omega and IWC will kill you on price if you have a change of heart in two years (or later) and want to try something else. Make sure you do not pay full retail on either the Omega, or especially the IWC. The DJ (especially with the rarer blue dial, and especially if you go with the 41 mm version) will do yo better if you end up trading for something else later. The other nice perk is that you are getting a COSC spec watch guaranteed with the DJ.

Based on what you're looking at, I would also recommend you think about Rolex Explorer I, take your pick between the 36 or 39 mm version (it is of course, black dial only). One more thing, if you want 41 mm, looking for a Date Just II (replaced by DJ 41) will save you a few bucks, and looks a tad sportier - though both are nominally 41 mm, the DJ II has a bit of a chunkier profile.

Good luck.

I have a stainless/white gold DateJust with ice blue dial and love it. They’re a great first watch when entering the luxury market. Don’t let the Anti-Rolex crowd discourage you if that’s want you want. Happy shopping!

That watch pictured is a very slick watch. I like that a lot

Who is the watch for? Are you wearing it for yourself or for others?

My new favorite is the Oceanus wavescepter.

Given who it's made by... Zero prestige

It looks like you’ve already done this, but look at smaller watches. The oversized watches of today won’t look good in ten years.

I’d also choose a neutral looking watch that you can dress up or down.

I got a very nice Longines from Nordstrom for a gift. I think it's a nice enough watch for everyday wear, especially with the NATO strap. I'm really reluctant to wear my more expensive watches every day. The Longines is a nice compromise.

It's all personal preference. From what you posted I would lean towards the SS Rolex.

I am not a watch guy at all and can’t justify spending a bunch of money on one. That being said, I want that Rolex datajust

Maybe the wife will buy me on in a few years for our 10th year anniversary.

Can't do watches or any other jewelry. Only reason I wear my wedding band is so I can sleep in my own bed.

Hard to go wrong with the Omega. I've always loved them; new, old, doesn't matter.
