An older Border Collie may be the perfect dog

I love Border Collies but they have a lot of energy at a young age and so they aren't for everyone.
But, an older one might be. The dog pictured below was a rescue - he spent the first few years of his life chained to a barrel. He escaped from his first owner, ended up on a farm. As he got older, less attention was paid to him. He's blind in one eye (raccoon fight) and 10 years (a guess). When I picked him up Saturday, his fur was dingy and he was covered in cockleburs and stickers. He was so matted and stickered up he looked like he had no tail.
Drive four hours and bring him home. He's never been inside a house in his life (or on a car trip). Within ten minutes, he's snoozing on a dog bed. He's now had a bath, been to Tractor Supply, and acts like he's been an in-town dog all of his life. Within a day, he was signaling to go in and out of the house.
He probably doesn't have a lot of life left, but I've never seen a dog fit in so quickly. He also is good at removing his own stickers, so he helps us out. He's had kids run up to him at the store, and he is great with them.
If you are looking for a good dog, think about rescuing an older border collie.

They are great pets. Very gentle.
I had a couple of them when I was a kid.

Good for you. I've owned a bunch, they are the greatest dogs out there. Once things settle out in the near future I'm getting 2 more.

He looks like a good boy! Glad you're able to give him the life he deserves, even if it's closer to the end.

And whoever downvotes you is dumb

God bless anybody who cares for dogs. Border collies are truly special animals- intelligent and cheerful.

I miss mine so much. He was older when I got him and absolutely the best barn/horse show dog ever. One day I’ll have another.

Or buy a new one from a reputable breeder.

I don’t have time for puppy antics. My last few dogs have all been older and wonderful.

Herding dogs are the best. Mine's a rescue sheltie, but we got her as a puppy. Super smart and super sweet.

Agree, and older dogs are the hardest to adopt, and that's sad, cause they are awesome.

Great post, I appreciate you for giving him a new life.

I'd pick golden retrievers too but i'm not going to argue too much on older border collies, great dogs.
Honestly I love any old dog that isn't some rat-sized thing.

I've been very impressed so far. He doesn't bark. He loves all the attention he is getting. He fits in well with my Aussie, who can be kind of snarky.
It really makes me mad that someone chained this dog up for the first years of his life.
You would think this dog had been an inside dog all his life - he has perfect indoor dog manners. He was an excellent herding and fetching dog, but since we've had him here, he shows no interest in either one. I think he's declared retirement LOL.

They are great dogs and are the dogs I'd have if I had younger kids at home.
