An interesting, and quite pretty, beetle I saw in the backyard earlier

It is the Fiery Searcher and is a Caterpillar-hunter Beetle. It was over an inch and a quarter long. It makes a living off of the web worms in the pecan and black walnut trees, and even the beetle larvae will feed on web worms and other tent caterpillars.
Don't mess with them too much as they have a nasty defense mechanism, per wiki:

The metallic looking colors really shine in the sun and can be spotted from a ways away.

I wonder what it'd be like to live a day in the life of that thing? Ive got a feeling it'd be pretty neat. May it reside in strawberry fields, forever, and never get eaten by a blackbird. Its friends would have to carry that weight of its loss.

It was moving at a good clip, so I didn't get a very good shot of its head, but it is equipped with a nice set of jaws....

We used to see them now and then when I was a kid. There was also a huge one with big horns that wasn't as colorful. We would try to make them fight each other but it seems like they were pacifists.
