That's what we called them too. It was fun to tie a string to their leg and fly them around.

Its remarkable how much they look like small eyes when you glance one out of the corner of your eye.

My kids find Hercules beetles, male and female, all the time on our property. They’re awesome.

I found a female one at my office in Tallahassee a couple of weeks ago. It was flipped on its back. I flipped it back onto its legs and took it to the grassy area.

Judging by this and another comment, I'm going to guess the pics are big?
I have a new phone and post the pics as they are when I upload them to postimg. I don't know how to change the size of them on mobile, but they look about the same size as any other pic posted here on my phone.

ETA: I think I may have just figured it out and it is easier than on my old phone.

Interesting, I've seen them in Central and South America, but not the US (Google does say that they are here). This male was hanging around at a lunch spot in Costa Rica. It must be the female behind the pole and below.

A few varieties I think. The Eastern Hercules is pretty common where we live in forested areas. Our house is a cul-de-sac away from a state park (really just a big arse forest), so we see them.

My kids seem to find them at night more than day time when they go try to catch lightning bugs and Google just now told me that makes sense as they are largely nocturnal.

Really active in the Summer.

ETA:

Not sure why, but I bet they've caught females 5x more than males.

Eight species worldwide and just two in the US. We just have one species in the eastern part of the country. There are also a number of subspecies, but not all are officially recognized.

Cool bugs and pictures, man! I wish I could be spending more time outside lately, but the older I get, the more the heat gets to me, lol...

Here are a few fairly recents bugs though...

I would have confused it for a leather-winged beetle of some sort and then been happy to add a new one to the list.

I saw a few even bigger in the Montreal Insectarium, don't know how I ended up there but that place was amazing.

The first time I saw that green beetle was when my brother who is about 9:00 at the time was sitting in the blue chair in the living room started jumping and slapping at his balls. That big beetle finally fell out of his shorts during the kerfuffle. it had pinched his ball sack! We all laughed so hard. That is one memory I'll never forget.

I'm not a jewelry person at all, but I came across a piece at a coin shop one day that was a jade beetle broach. It was beautiful and I wanted it for my wife, I thought it would look great for her, but it was 3x what I could afford.
It was just beautifully done, I think from Japan. I divorced her anyway, sometimes things work out.
