Educated parents lead to educated children. Texas also ranks at or below the national average in most testing metrics. Lastly, Texas is near the bottom of educational spending. They get alot of bang for their buck, but historically that can lead to problems too.

A few reasons why Houston suburbs and many other areas in TX spend lower than Louisiana and get a lot of bang from your buck.

- The population is booming and not an issue getting bond money to build new schools which they do all the time
- The schools tend to be much larger, some are even 4 stories high. You can hold a large number of kids in one giant building instead of housing the same number of kids in 2-3 schools.
- higher denser populations means less distance to bus kids to school which saves money.

As a result TX has low cost per student ratios and can afford to have higher teacher salaries to get better quality teachers and constantly invest in new teaching technology and innovative learning.

It’s amazing how Texas is right next to us and yet there’s such a huge drop off. Louisiana politics

Always going to be a problem given the consistent influx of people from the south and east

Completely true.

I have another one to vote on in November to add 5 more schools to our ISD, and that's after just opening 3 more this year. We see improvements, new facilities, and just our money being spent in a manner that benefits us. So we have no problem voting for the bonds.

What's wrong with healthcare in La? I live in the BR area and the healthcare I've received has always been good.

Math not a strong suit for CNBC. Look at the individual scores for LA and AL. Neither had an individual score even or above their overall. What kind of bullshite is this?

This just magnifies how screwed up Louisiana is. With it’s basically unlimited natural resources some of the largest ports in the country and being nieighbors with such a successful state. We should be at least middle of the back just by default with all that positive stuff going for us. It is almost like they are trying to fail on purpose.

I’d have my boys and me in Houston in a nano second but nothing is going to get my Dad out of Baton Rouge. When I lose him, Baton Rouge will be in my rear view mirror as soon as I can start the car

It's average at best compared to cities of like size. Just boils down to lack of options, availability, and specialty care.

Unless you are comparing Baton Rouge to the Texas Medical Center (one of the world’s best), Baton Rouge is very good.

Are you one of those SJW’s that are mad that EKL and LSU were merged with OLOL?

By contrast, Louisiana’s health care system is extremely bad in rural areas. Like a lot of states, they have a serious physican shortage outside of the metros. Rural hospitals are struggling in a big way and have to cut services - including the hospital in my home town. Hopefully the new med school at ULM alleviates some of that.

Baton Rouge is good, but there is a physician shortage in rural areas in Louisiana.

It’s the same way in Pennsylvania, Oregon, Ohio, Mississippi, Arkansas, Indiana, and about 20 other states.

Houston and Dallas are black holes that suck in nearly all of Louisiana’s young, educated workforce.

If Texas sucked more, Louisiana would have a better shot at limiting that. You’d think that the state government would have done something about their shitty tax policy to be more competitive.
