They're likely using the SPLC's list (Southern Poverty Law Center). They're actually a very good organization who get deep in the muck to understand who/what/where these groups exist. Yes, they label hate groups against whites, too.

If that poll were confined to New Orleans that would mean 30% of the city is a hate group.

I think it depends on where you live, to an extent. Where we leave, I don't see or sense a lot of racism, as the minorities in this area are solid middle to upper class, for the most part. My wife's hometown, on the other hand (and likely much like a lot of rural LA), they're considerably more racist but are dealing with a ton of minorities in very poor financial straits (and all that goes along with that (crime, drugs, welfare, schools suck, etc.)). Of course, the whites are mostly poor and trashy too, but they don't talk as much about that.
True. I also think the MSN writer who wrote this likely has underlying racism as well though. This site is a poor indicator of society as a whole though.

How is Louisiana that racist? It probably has the highest % of black people and we know that black people can't be racist. If white people are the biggest threat to the country, then the states with the highest concentration of white people would be the states that are the biggest threat to democracy.

Louisiana is not even a top ten state for black population. The top two black states, Texas and California, have more black folks than Louisiana has total population. Go to black demographics dot com.
