Love that part injected in there. Couldn't just say they splurged on an Alaskan cruise?

People act like eating out is some type of constitutional right, a mandate or necessity. Eating out is a relatively new thing in society, only really getting widespread after WW2.
I had grandparents that ate practically every meal at home, save for the occasional road trip where they might have bought a hamburger from sonics.

Why not?
It’s not like anything really matters anymore.
People outside of the mid-older Millennial generations simply cannot comprehend how shitty our lot has been, in terms of economic opportunity. We've had 2 events that have destroyed earning potential that typically come every 2nd or 3rd generation (like a 100 years event). TWO.
The 2008 crash alone was enough to lower non-economic factors like life expectancy. But then, as this generation was finally recovering and entering the apex earning portion of their career: Covid.
What's scary is the young generation (that doesn't have a name yet) may be a lost generation due to our insane Covid policies with schooling. The lost IQ and developmental delays are not fixable.

There is definitely a keeping up with the Joneses aspect to this, but it's undeniable that everyday life is infinitely more expensive than it was 4 years ago. The middle class is running out of money (by design) and are having to start using credit cards just to cover monthly expenses.
Groceries, gas, and power bills alone are responsible for a lot of this.

Trying to max out a 401K, Roth IRA and HSA versus a lavish vacation
I’m there on 2/3 of these! Working on the 401k.

It's by design. The govt wants you in debt as much as possible so they ultimately control what you do.
Thank a democrat.

For himself?
To a certain degree and this has been an issue way before social media, people keeping up with the Jones but I wish there was numbers on increase in emotional purchases by year.. I would bet it would start to increase in the early 2010s and then increase every year from that point.

This is definitely true for me but I’m not blowing all of my savings or anything that drastic.

My best friend lives like this. Good job, good salary. But she spends her money living life and traveling. It helps they fly fee bc of her fiancées hub, and one day they will each inherit their parents’ homes. She says why pour it all into savings when we don’t know the future, and is fine with whatever her company places into her 401k. Maybe she’s the smart one.

I've said I would never go on a cruise and in June I will be going on one that will be going to Canada and Alaska. But $7000? They must have planned that bitch without even doing research on when to book what and promos, etc. Either that or he was paying for a bunch of shite he probably will not even use.

I admit to eating out a bit too much and taking the occasional weekend hiking roadtrip, but good lord this guy is just an idiot.

The couple booked the trip only a few weeks after Lindsey, 37, quit her job to be a full-time caregiver to their 8-year-old son, who has special needs.
