Federal funding to eliminate a racist road. Seriously.

If they hire the same company demolishing the Hard Rock, it may be awhile.

Yeah, this is a boondoggle in the making. They act like but for the interstate North Claiborne would be some thriving black business district. But they ignore the fact that South Claiborne, which is not burdened by the interstate, is also a crime ridden shitehole in the areas where it is surrounded by the hood. Hint: The elevated expressway isn't the problem.

That'll eliminate carjackings for sure.

While the rest of the state is in desperate need for more and better highways, New Orleans has surplus infrastructure that they need federal and state help to remove. At least that’s how I read this.

This is why people don't take shite like this seriously. Traumatic?? Your "elders" probably looked at the overpass and said "frick that road" then moved on with their lives because they weren't giant pussies and now you're claiming they were traumatized.
Give me a break.

Getting rid of the expressway would just result in gentrification of the surrounding neighborhoods, and then all of the same people clamoring for this to happen would complain for another reason.

How does the elevated expressway "separate" neighborhoods? With it or without it, all one has to do is walk / drive across Claiborne avenue. How would tearing it down unite anything?

A few years ago I found out 110 in BR is also racist. Elevated highways seem to be more racist than surface level highways. I guess it’s the way they were raised.

It’s just a big ‘feel good’ tactic. They feel like tearing down the interstate and the local population will immediately clean itself up and make viable business all around there catering to the increased traffic, the problem still lies in the people. Viable business likely will arise, but it’s not going to be from the local people with no drive, vision, or CAPITAL.
Maybe they’ll get jobs on the road crew since they can walk to work and transition that money earned to opening up boutique stores and sustainable restaurants, but I’m not holding my breathe.

Dammit, this is funnier than it should be.

At some point, we might discover that inanimate objects aren't causing dysfunctional behavior.

A surface highway will divide neighborhoods more than a raised highway. What is wrong with these people?

I remember years back OweO said I-110 was racist because it was built to divide the white and the black neighborhoods.
Which anyone with even a passing memory of the demographics knows that’s just utter bullshite.
And how the frick does destroying infrastructure do ANY good whatsoever?
frick Pedo Joe, frick New Orleans, frick the politicians, frick the corruption.

Before the elevated interstate went up, that stretch was like Esplanade Ave, with a neutral ground full of live oaks.
-But- can’t put the genie back in the bottle.

Yeah, but what was the population like?
As bad as today?

In the 1950s the design was for a loop with an expressway on the river, a highway over Elysian fields and a highway over Claiborne with the Pontchartrain expressway to be built over the canal that was being filled in.
Two of the high rise projects were canceled because of fight from the French quarter. So the traffic was always worse than it should have been based on original designs. Now rather than add to, they will take away six lanes of interstate highway to be replaced with six lanes of surface streets with 8 stop lights.

They’ve been talking about this for decades.

But they will get trees back and that is why people are killing each other, they don’t have any trees.
