Lose weight, gain confidence, sale yourself. Lot of people in the working man's world won't hire fat people. Never trust a fat hand or a skinny cook.

People think I am joking but if I were going to learn a trade and start all over again I would do it in plumbing. Master Plumbers make bank and they are all so busy they can basically name their price for their services.

ill be honest. it's more of an economy thing, than an age thing.

at 37, lets say you got your first career type job at 21, or 16 years ago, or 1998. It was very much an employees' market at that time. Many job creations, signing bonuses, moving expenses paid, etc. were somewhat normal.

Now, in 2014, it is more of a employers' market. Many people are underemployed, i.e. business degree holder delivering pizzas.

Exactly this.

There are opportunities for you out there. Especially if you mean what you say that you will do just about anything. It will take patience and persistence. Good luck

Go talk to a recruiter. You can get all of your uniforms, food, and housing on top of your base pay. There is no shame in that game at any age.

You talking about the military? Stupid question: is it common for people to enter the military mid-life (like after age 30)? I've always wondered if that could be an option.

Take this opportunity to acquire a recession proof skill or trade. If you're broke and out of work, do like a lot of umm well other people do and apply for a grant to get back in school.

37 is too young to be age discriminated against, it just appears that you're applying for jobs that young twenty something's apply for and their resume prob stacks up better than yours.

Take the bull by the horns and make yourself needed in the work force.

Get licensed to sell health insurance and get on as an independent broker for a few different companies.

Hell with summer coming up put an ad on Craigslist and go cut grass and trim shrubs. I know people that do this 8 months out of the year and make $80K

Yeah, there are plenty of 37 year olds who get offered jobs left and right due to their experience. Being out of work for years is what's doing it, not the fact that you're 37. If you're 27 and older and have a massive gap on your resume that has nothing to do with college, its a huge red flag.

I did a number of things. Mostly sales and insurance. I was licensed at the time to do property and casualty insurance. Basically i had sold car insurance. Wasn't very lucrative. But hey it paid the bills. And yeah i did put that on my resume about taking care of a family member. I think part of it is, there is just no jobs that i see being advertised. The good ones are far and few in between. Usually it seems you have to know someone who will be like, hey like me talk to someone. See what i can do. Otherwise, going at it on your own. That shite is harder than most ppl think.

Sales is a bit more difficult to get into, but insurance is easy as hell. I don't care who you are, anyone can fricking sell insurance, and if you can do it well, you can make some good money. Seriously, I interviewed for an insurance position (really just to practice interviewing, but still) and one guy came in with a backwards cap, baggy jeans, and a skull t-shirt, and he came back for the second round, much to my disbelief. If he can get that far, no doubt you can.

First thing you need to realize is that you aren't above any job. You can go out tomorrow and find a job, probably not a prestigious one by any means, but a job nonetheless. Once you have a job, begin the process of searching for a career. Right now you wreak of unemployment and nobody wants to hire someone like that. You need to build up momentum.

OP. Go to Alaska, work during the warm months, and come home in the winter.

Go check out that thread on Liviston, ND and make some bank in the oil industry

Known some people who did this, and it is without question one of the worst jobs in the US, but the money is undeniable, you'll make bank up there, but everyday you come home from work, you'll think about killing yourself. No one lasts long at that job or in North Dakota.

I can't imagine what'd be like living up there and I was sort of being facetious suggesting it but still, that's work I figure. I think it could be an interesting reboot into the working world but I know too little not to mention I have no plans on going to North Dakota.

^^^. This. My buddy had gotten laid off from an oil field service company in 2009. He kind of wallowed in it for a while... His unemployment, net check paid him enough to drown his sorrows. But that gap in employment put the hurting on him.

When those checks stopped, it was amazing how quick he got his ship righted... Went back to school to finish his Petroleum Technologies Associates Degree.... Within a couple of months of starting his degree program, his old company rehired him. Within 6 months of that, he got on as a drill site manger trainee for one of the Major Oil Field companies, and he's making 6 figures as a supervisor.

I'll be honest, your post comes across just like his FB statuses used too.... Not very motivated and wanting to blame everyone else for your woes. I'm not trying to be judgemental, but you have to be willing to change fields... The oil and gas industry is booming. Be willing to start as a helper. If you are professional and motivated, you can write your ticket.

There are only a couple of reserves you can enlist in at 37. The majority are 35 and younger depending on the service. However, there are police forces that you can still apply for.

Look at municipalities

Drive down hwy 1 or la 308 and you can land a relatively lucrative job in no time on a boat or offshore.
