Kind of strange thing happened to me a few years ago. My mom got breast cancer surgery. And i had to give up my job to take care of her full time. After being out of work a few yrs. I managed to actually get myself some part time jobs doing retail, and a whole bunch of crap that no one would want to do unless they were desperate for a job.

Now i am in the precarious situation in which i want to get myself back in the work place. At this point i could care less what it was. Cause i can learn quickly how to do anything. But no matter how many interviews i go to. Once they see a guy almost 40. It is like well thanks for coming in, we will keep in touch. Sucks really. I am just now realizing what my parents told me when they were younger about searching for employment once you are older.

I am on the northshore in Slidell, so if anyone can throw me a bone. I would appreciate it. Anyone else go through something like this? Would love to hear if anyone else has gone through something like this.

I thought it was more of a 50 not a 40 thing. You're still very young.

Best of luck.

What did you do before your Mom's health declined?

Can you not use the 15+ years experience in that sector as an in for an opportunity?

Did you explain to them why you left the work force in the first place? Maybe they see the gap where you weren't working and think that you went to jail or something.

I think the 50 thing is more of a that is when they start laying you off thing. The issue with me is being almost 40 and not having worked for a while. Well it wasn't the wisest decision to not work at my age. But what could i do? I was in the position that i had to take care of a parent. I am sure if most of you were in the same position. You would do the same.

I think it has a whole lot less to do with being 37 and a lot to do with being out of work. That's a big red flag. Is there plenty of consistency on your resume before that?

Have you considered looking into working for an agency/company that specializes in long term care or patient management in an oncology wing of a hospital. Pretty clear you have experience there.

I did a number of things. Mostly sales and insurance. I was licensed at the time to do property and casualty insurance. Basically i had sold car insurance. Wasn't very lucrative. But hey it paid the bills. And yeah i did put that on my resume about taking care of a family member. I think part of it is, there is just no jobs that i see being advertised. The good ones are far and few in between. Usually it seems you have to know someone who will be like, hey like me talk to someone. See what i can do. Otherwise, going at it on your own. That shite is harder than most ppl think.

This. You need to be upfront in your cover-letter about your gap in employment and that your Mom's health is no longer a factor for your employment.

Go talk to a recruiter. You can get all of your uniforms, food, and housing on top of your base pay. There is no shame in that game at any age.

I changed careers at 33 years old with no experience on the oil and gas industry. I told them I wanted to work from theground floor to understand the culture of the company and only asked if i would have opportunity to grow if I proved myself....it worked.

Fyi, I had to move to Houston. But i was willing.

Are you physically in good enough shape and mechanically inclined to a degree that would let you get in on the ground floor in one of the skilled trades that are in demand in this area right now? Join a union apprenticeship program or get hired on as a helper in a craft.

In today's market, you are a huge red flag if you're unemployed. It doesn't matter why you're unemployed. Employers see it that you lost your previous job for a reason. There are many other candidates out there that are gainfully employed and looking to jump ship.

Can you not sell cars? What about college degree? Can you look at working offshore for a while?

Seems like there is always someone hiring for this.

There are jobs out there but you just have to look harder IMO

Hell, if one was really desperate you can make some income from home these days to get by on.
