I understand the complications and seriousness of alcoholism. Some people even have a genetic makeup that makes addiction more likely or less likely. But when people get addicted to meth or heroin nobody refers to it as a disease. Why is alcoholism a disease?

what?
addiction is often referred to as a disease, regardless of the substance of choice.
People don't just start out sucking off baws for meth

Addiction is a disease. If you’re addicted to heroin, they call you a drug addict or a junkie. Alcoholism has just been so common throughout history that it has its own term and been by far the most studied.

I was randomly reading stuff the other day and learned that alcoholism is so bad on the Pine Ridge Reservation, that something like 25% of all babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and 85% of families are affected by alcoholism.

Because any habits that are difficult to break are now referred to as diseases. We do this to make people feel better about themselves, which actually hinders them in breaking the habit.
brb grabbing a king size kit-kat and a liter of cola for breakfast. I’m addicted to that, you know...

We are all addicted to sugar.

I used to think this, but you’re wrong. Addiction clearly hasn’t affected your life to an extreme degree yet.

i'm not a praying man, but if I was i would pray that you never have to anyone affected by alcoholism or addiction in your family. They are both diseases my friend, it's not something I would wish on my worst enemy. The heartache that very often comes along with disease is gut-wrenching.

It follows a pretty specific, identifiable process - physiologically, psychologically and in matters of routine life. Also speaks to loss of control - amount consumed as well as when consumed.
Takes men longer to go through the progression than women and youth - at least it did with our research
