Honestly I wish I could just stop and never want to drink again. I have no idea how to do that. If any of you know how to, please let me know.

I've read about transcendental meditation, hypnotism, tried supplements... Nothing works. I mean, I can function just fine but I feel like I'm fricking myself up down the road.

I bet if you lost your job and couldn't afford it you'd stop. Just stop being a pussy and stop

I used to think this, but you’re wrong. Addiction clearly hasn’t affected your life to an extreme degree yet.

These internet "experts" always amuse me. Addiction is most definitely a disease, but there are still some folks who think the earth is flat.

Insurance companies wanted in on it.

Hence, the disease myth.

Wrong. It came from a doctor who specialized in treatment. I'm going to go with his opinion. Insurance companies don't want to pay anything for addiction. How does your thinking even begin to make sense?

This is the absolute truth.

You need something else to fill your life. You also don’t have to drink until you pass out.

Doctors caused the opioid crisis. You think they have the best opinion?

True addictions? Yeah.

Addiction is a disease, though it's more of a self induced injury.

Addicted people are temporarily brain damaged.

Wait just a damn minute. If doctors caused the opioid crisis then is it their fault or the addicts? Can't wait for the reply to this one?

The doctor SPECIALIZED in treatment. He wasn't pushing opiates. So yeah, I'll go with him.

True addictions? Yeah.

Define true addictions?

And who gets to determine which are "true", and which are "false" addictions?

The addict. You're going to love that answer.

If nothing else, this thread perfectly demonstrates why anonymity is still vital even in 2018.

You need professional help. Some folks swear by a 12-step program, and I'm not saying don't do that. However, also get professional help - find a local addiction specialist, preferably one focusing on alcoholism.

You absolutely are - every organ system is at risk, notably the brain and liver (you know, the organs you can't really live without and they can't really replicate the function of?).

I don't hang on to the "my alcoholism is a disease and there's no hope" as a Crutch. Yes, it's a choice I make. Like the poster said previously, I wake up not wanting to drink again but about 3pm,thaf itch is too diserable to not scratch

Cancer can go into remission, as can alcoholism. Once you're an alcoholic, you'll always be one even if you haven't had a drink in 50 years.

Sure

I do think/wish there was a different terms for issues that were self inflicted vs brought about with no choice of the person

It doesnt seem right something like ALS is in the same buck as addiction

This. I didn't read whoever posted in reply to you, but you might need detox to stop safely. Seizures are real and can kill you. Treatment is helpful. Some people can stay sober without 12 step groups, but in my experience the results without aren't great. Hope whoever finds some help.
