I was randomly reading stuff the other day and learned that alcoholism is so bad on the Pine Ridge Reservation, that something like 25% of all babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and 85% of families are affected by alcoholism.

I have heard several times that Native Americans are greatly affected by alcoholism. Why is that?

Besides, ya know, white people completely ruining their lives and all

Because any habits that are difficult to break are now referred to as diseases. We do this to make people feel better about themselves, which actually hinders them in breaking the habit.

Absolutely correct. We also do this to absolve the loved ones who enable the addicts the guilt of being complicit in the addict's ruination. By labeling it a disease then no one is really at fault anymore.

Count me in as one that is not on the "Addiction is a disease" side of this.

Addiction is the result of "choices" you have made whether it is to consume too much alcohol or stick needles in your veins to get high.

Diabetes, cancer, ALS, etc. are diseases and not something anyone chooses to have happen to them. And before anyone jumps my crap, I know things people do things that can bring on these diseases such as smoking, eating too much fried foods, sugars, sodas, etc. but that doesn't explain how small kids get fatal diseases like cancer, leukemia, brain tumors etc.

It can ruin lives. I was an alcoholic in my youth. Playing college sports, I had a bright future but couldn’t put down the bottle. Costs me millions.

My GF is addicted to watching Investigation ID. Also, addicted to playing games on her phone. Seriously. She can't stop.

She has a disease? Now I feel bad for saying anything to her. She's sick, like a cancer patient. She has a disease.

Are you some kind of damn moron?
Some people will literally die if they stop drinking or using the drug they are addicted to. It's not quite as simple as breaking their habbit.

No one woke up and thought "hey today seems like a good day to start shooting up in the gas station bathroom" either. Doesn't mean it's not a disease. It's a process and doesn't happen overnight.

There is some evidence of that being the case these days. Porn is the next big wave of addiction that will gain attention. It's a HUGE problem, no pun intended. And it can really have deadly consequences too. You won't die of DT's but it can ruin you the same. Electronics are becoming an issue as well.
