The measure was signed into law by Alabama's Gov. Kay Ivey on Aug. 10, and had been introduced by Republican state representative Steve Hurst of Calhoun County. Hurst would prefer that those offenders who have been convicted of these crimes were permanently castrated through surgical means, according to NBC News

That's awesome. I hope none are wrongly convicted though - that would suck.

Yeah the question is how well do you trust the Alabama judicial system?

The state shouldn't be in the execution business and they certainly shouldn't be in the castration business. I'm always amazed at the people that think the same group of politicians that can't effectively deliver a letter or balance a budget can somehow conjure the wisdom of Solomon in regards to a man's life or death. fricking amazing. At least prison gives the system the ability to correct mistakes.

Odd website to bring up something more than a year old. Alabama was not even close to the first to pass this type of bill.

quote:

June 11, 2019

quote:

Alabama becomes seventh state to approve castration for some sex offenses

quote:

The new law requires the procedure for anyone convicted of sex crimes with children under 13 as a condition of parole.

quote:

Alabama is at least the seventh state allowing or requiring physical or chemical castration of some sex offenders, joining California, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, Texas and Wisconsin

The ACLU has taken issue with the law, and the Alabama chapter has called it "unconstitutional." Randall Marshall, the executive director for Alabama's ACLU, has said that chemical castration for sex offenders who harm minors under 13 shows that legislators "really misunderstand what sexual assault is about. Sexual assault isn't about sexual gratification. It's about power. It's about control."

Putting aside the creepy certainty that the ACLU director has regarding the inner workings of pedophiles, some studies have shown that chemical castration works.

Does it work?

In a 2005 review of medical literature in the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, researchers said that chemical castration “reduced testosterone levels and affected sexual deviance.” But they added a note of caution: “These studies used self-report to measure decreases in deviant sexual drive, fantasies and behavior — a methodology with questionable reliability.”

A report in the Journal of Korean Medical Science in 2013 said that chemical castration “results in very low levels of recidivism despite the strong psychological factors that contribute to sexual offending.”

Researchers in the United States and abroad have also found substantially lower recidivism rates among people who had surgical castration procedures, compared to people who were released from custody without any such treatments.

All that being said,

This will never actually occur

OK, well now these people get to feel the "power" and "control" of the state and see how it feels. Seems fair to me.

Representative Hurst disagrees. "If they're going to mark these children for life, they need to be marked for life," he said.

Again, I like this guy.

The actual law is chemical castration. The OP and/or article is misleading

I don't know. The guy that shot that 5 year old in the head in broad daylight in front of his family should be executed.

The state/politicians doesn't determine guilt or innocence. A civilian jury does. And death penalty cases should be unanimous.
