The governor of cash-strapped Alabama wants to implement a state lottery to keep the lights on.
"The state of Alabama has not and cannot at this time pay for the most basic services that we must provide to our people," said Governor Robert Bentley in a video message. "The time has come for us to find a permanent solution."

According to the Executive Budget Office of Alabama, state tax revenues have flatlined in recent years and can't keep up with expenses. The office has projected more budget shortfalls, despite cost-cutting.

because Alabama give sweet pensions (the LSU coach Steele) went back to Alabama so he could drain the pension that Alabama freely gives.
of course Louisiana isn't so bad themselves at giving out pensions.

Just another pool of money for idiot politicians to raid and eventually put them right back into the same situation.

Sad day for those poor, dumb mother frickers. Why don't they just pray for money, you know, for the kids.
That was literally their excuse for being too high and mighty 10 years ago when this was proposed. They didn't want the lottery, you know, for the kids. We have to think about the Alabama kids' future. Despite being second from last in education and just about every other category, we couldn't allow something like the lottery because we're thinking about the kids.
frick these dumb shits that run this state. They shut down a project that was a projected $100 million plus and 1500 to 2000 jobs around Dothan because they had bingo slot machines and they knew that when they initially approved it.

This makes no sense.
Alabama has more diverse industry than probably any other southern state.
Hell, NASA and the Army spend billions there every year.
If I was a resident there, I would wonder WTH is going on.

Way overdue for AL
FWIW, I think Alabama is considered more fiscally solvent than LA and MS, so they have that going for them

In the long run, are any state lotteries for education?
I know they'll show you money going from lotteries to education but where does the money that pre lottery now get directed?

I really don't get it.
You can get off a bus in Huntsville and if you can piss clear you can make $50K a year.

Is that supposed to be an insult? Everybody else has one, it's a long time coming.
If the dumbasses in this state would've voted for it in 1998 the last time it was proposed, by a democratic governor who was elected on the platform of bringing Alabama a lottery, we might not have this problem.

I think so, too, but I haven't looked at them thoroughly.
I just assumed they were doing very well, based on my travels there.
