I don't recall mentioning Mobile but while we are at it, Baldwin County sure as hell isn't part of Mobile either like we get lumped into.

The Gulf Coast is not a political entity, for the time being. You are a resident of Alabama. Sorry and

Funny. The MFers just announced some big prison expansion plan.

Hey! Why don't we legalize weed and let a bunch of people out of prison. Oh yeah, and get a lottery!

If I was a resident there, I would wonder WTH is going on.
They are funded primarily by sales taxes, which fluctuate and don't provide a steady revenue source. The property taxes are hideously low. I own 70 acres and pay $125/yr in property taxes. And the state constitution requires that a greater percentage of all tax dollars taken in be earmarked than in any other state. Consequently, one part of state government can end up doing just fine while another part is barely scraping by.

The biggest shortfalls are in Medicaid, if I remember correctly, and Bentley refused Federal funds for that. Alabama simply does not collect taxes at a rate sufficient enough to pay for the services it offers/provides.

There is nothing about the Democratic Party of Alabama that inspires any sense of competent governance.

Personally, I'd like for the 256 to secede. 251, you're encouraged to do so as well.

Secede from Alabama? Yes. From the US....well, I'll save the choice words I have for you.

The problem in Alabama is that the once upon a time White Democratic crooks have for the most part charged their label to Republican. That leaves the Democrats as the party of Joe Reed and his race baiting crooks....with a few white wedge issue whacko hanging around.

On the Reupblican side, you have the Mike Hubbard/Del Marsh/trip Pittman "businessman" (crooks) and the Bill Hightower religious facade part of "the family" crooks.

And of course there is Governor Burns who says if you don't love Jesus you're not his brother while grabbing Rebecca masons breast.

And he can take 2 million of BP money to give himself a beach house but can't spare the first cola in ten years for state employees....

earmarked

Its about time someone hit the keyword jackpot. Only those that follow Alabama politics know that earmarks control the direction.

BTW, someone in this thread talked about the State selling the soul to get big business in. This is also hitting the nail on the head. The incentives are so great that the state actually pays for a lot of business to come in. Tax and utility credits with no expiration are rampant. Some of those businesses have million dollar a month utility bills that are paid for by tax payers. In return, businesses provide employment. Another big screw up on part of Alabama was land grabbing at the turn of the century. Millions of acres were sold to likes of CSX railroad for pennies for the acre with zero property tax reaponsibilities... forever. These companies turned around creating realty and holding companies that to this day make money hand over fist without the state getting a cut. If you and I do this we get taxed sky high.

Im sure this stuff is every State USA.
