re: Advice on breaking the news to your kid about Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc?

My oldest, 13, 100% knows, but I have not and will not say anything about Santa not being real. My wife did put her in charge of moving the elf for her younger sisters this year, I kinda got pissed at my wife about that. I am all for letting them believe as long as they can, they have the rest of their lives to be adults

He will be 10 next month, is that old enough to know the truth?
That’s your call, but imo he’ll have plenty of time to realize how brutal life can be. I’d try to squeeze another year of Santa magic
Santa still comes for my 25 yo and 19 yo.

I have 2 girls - 13 and 7. Oldest kinda let us know a couple of years ago that she knew. We just told her to please continue to play along for her sister. She took that to heart and helped out this last christmas with presents and elves and stuff. They are both sweet kids - we never planned to break it to either of them - just kinda wanted to let it happen.

Same...mine are 10 and 12 and they still play along ...probably more for my sake as I enjoy the magic as much as them.

My son (10) questioned a lot this year. Made a lot of comments about hearing things during the night when my wife went to the bathroom (her excuse to go set out the gifts). Made several more comments on the trip to my parents house where he'd be with his cousins. One the same age who knew already from earlier in the year and the rest younger. We broke the news so that he wouldn't make it an issue around his cousins. Was a terrible feeling. However, He was over it by the time we got to my parents 45 minutes later.

Mine are not old enough to start putting it together yet. Hell, we accidently ended up seeing Santa 3 days in a row and 4 times in 6 days and she was convinced the first 3 were the same guy, and the 4th one was a guy dressed up to make everyone happy.
But I can answer one of your questions based on how my parents handled it. They did not want to "break the news over Christmas", so when we were 9 or 10, they would wake us up the night before Easter and have us help set-up the baskets. We would then have a conversation about it that night, and let us "sleep on it" and ready for any questions the next few days. This also meant no more money for losing teeth. Pissed me off at the time

Don’t
They figure it out but we still don’t discuss it. We just suspend disbelief to keep the magic partially in place

Didn't have to worry about it. The kids' cousins, friends, siblings, a-hole uncle/aunt, etc., will handle it for you.
It was a bad day, however, when my wife made only a half arse attempt to hide the Elf on a Shelf after Christmas and the kid found it.

I can't get over the fact that I live in a country where there are 13 year olds who still believe in Santa Claus and 13 year olds who bang their teachers.

I figured I'd catch some shite about this. I look at it like this. It appears to me, that so much more responsibility is placed at the feet of kids these days. They are forced to grow up and address things that me and my friends never even considered when we were 13. So i figure why not let him believe, allow him to be a kid, when it was time for him to know, he found out. It all worked out in the end.

My parents never said anything about Santa but one day I went outside to see what my Dad had killed hunting. He was skinning a rabit and I said what did you get and he responded " The Easter Bunny"

Yeah… I started my freshman year of high school at 13.
I think I called out my mom about Santa at age 8.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback / advice. I'll probably just wait and see.
That's a very good point.

Except a 13 year old boy in middle school will be bullied relentlessly if this ever comes up among his peers. In fact, a lot of teachers will have an Elf of the Shelf in the classroom just to be cute. No one assumes a 13 year old isn't in on it.
Our kids found out around 4-5th grade when they started asking a lot of direct questions. It was easy, as Christians, to just tie Santa into the act of gift-giving to celebrate Jesus's birth. We framed it as sort of "well now you're mature enough to be in on the secret so you get to help spread the joy to younger children and keep the magic alive."
So in truth, Santa IS real, he just lives in our hearts. That way you never really lose the magic.

What's the age most of you do this? I have young ones and am curious how much longer I have for this charade.
When I learned my parents were Santa and the rest, I told them they lied to me, and I never trusted them from that moment on.
I told my daughter as she grew up that Santa was a game adults played for children. She got presents but knew the truth. She's an electrical/computer engineer and doing fine.

I was the fourth kid. Santa, the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy never stood a chance.
