Yeah, I got a cracked/broken molar that needs to get fixed. Most likely crown. But I only want to get done what needs to get done. The last dentist I went to tried to sell my stuff I didn't need like teeth whitening, x-rays not covered by insurance, teeth straighteners, and preventative restorations. I got so mad at the sell job that I haven't been to the dentist in awhile.

I wonder if I"ll get the "you haven't been to the dentist in awhile so you need to get all these things done, so I can buy a new boat"

Just tell them you'll deal with that after the crown. Then don't. Or do.

Go to an independent dentist, not LA Dental Center or Delta Dental or whatever.

I go to a small practice in Chalmette. Husband and wife are both dentists. Wightman Family Dental. I hadn't gone to a dentist in like 6 years until I finally went at end of 2020. They filled cavities and said come back. Been back twice since then for regular cleanings. No upsell at all, not much of a wait, in and out in like 35 min.

They do take my dental insurance but I believe they don't take a number of plans.

This is a new dentist. I got no problem with panoramic x-ray now since they're covered by insurance, but my plan only covers %50 percent of crowns and fillings and so on with a max of $1000, so I'm going to get fricked anyways financially unless I can keep it to one crown and or one crown and one filling.

The thing is that the cracked/broken molar doesn't hurt but it just feels weird. I know getting it fixed is good so it doesn't get worse and I'm willing to do that.

This happened to me at a dentist. The office manager was sent in to try to convince me I needed to have all my silver amalgam fillings taken out and replaced by these new ones that insurance wouldn't cover. Tried to scare me with all the possible issues the silver amalgam might cause.

I looked her straight in the eye and asked her what kind of fillings she had. She said the silver amalgam. Never went back to that dentist again.

Just pick another one

Thanks for the advice, but with my insurance plans I am limited. My mom has gone to local practices and she complained about them the most with the upsells and prices. The last dentist I went to was a local guy and they tried selling me and in fact did sell me shite I didn't need. So I'm trying a regional "chain". There are a lot of dentists within 5 miles of my house so I have options if I don't like this new one.

Tell them you want to schedule a limited exam with 1 PA to diagnose a broken molar you would like fixed. Tell them you only want to be treatment planned for the single issue. Tell them you are in pain and only want a resolution for that pain. You have no interest in seeing or speaking to a hygienist.

That should keep most of the upselling at bay. Pain is the magic word at my practice. If a patient is in pain, staff is never to present cosmetics.

They will use emotional language to sell to you far more effectively than a private practice.

Just fyi...

Yeah

Considering your current situation you may be limited.

Once you get that fixed... how much are you paying for that dental insurance? Lots of plans have very low caps.

I think mine is like $16 a month for $1,500 coverage. How much is cash pay for a cleaning? Might not be that much more expensive to just cash pay it for a cleaning.

About $125 if your gums are healthy. Maybe a little more at some places. That's for cleaning, exam, and xrays.

this ^^^^^^^

and tell them straight up front you dont have dental insurance so everything is out of pocket so you arent paying for anything extra. most of them, once they know insurance isnt there to be fleeced, will give you the normal price for things and only do whats needed

Rookie mistake. A smart dentist will sell you just enough stuff to come in right below your total free coverage for the year, and then schedule you again for the following year.

Don’t pay it. Just find a new dentist. There is always a new dentist.
