Uhhhhh.... the 'gate structure' among other things is going to be a complete mess. I would not be surprised if they dont keep the old msy open (not tear it down) because of how poorly designed the new airport is. The airport is going to be a nightmare for all involved from Customers to workers.

Not sure how small Austin is compared to DFW, but the ole lady was telling me how awful it was last week because of SXSW.

I think it was some kind of negotiated settlement because of the increased noise pollution from the airport.
Investing in all those things probably cost more than a lot of the houses in that area IMHO.
Not debating the absurdity of spending that money but it definitely happened.

MSY currently has 40 terminals/gates (46 if you include Concourse A) at the old Airport and the new terminal will have 35 terminals/gates.
The new airport will have 5 less terminals or 11 less terminals for an airport in 2001 had 8 million flyers versus 14 million in 2018.

Yep, my grandma lived up there for years and had new windows installed to reduce plane noise.
They went right over her house, pretty low.

And this is after it was 'expanded' before it was even built. This airport will be a nightmare for all involved.

Oh I'm not denying it happened.
I lived on basically a runway for barksdale afb and had B52s landing all day. Didn't notice a thing after about a week.

Wasn’t there an airport out west (Denver?) which was a total clusterfrick with regards to cost and size? This sounds like it will be up there.
IIRC, the cost was over a billion dollars to end up with fewer gates than the existing airport.

Yes it was Denver's new airport which replaced Stapleton. According to Parmen on the PB it is the International Headquarters for the Illuminati.

Yeah, but it's prettier and they can do more with less now due to "efficiency." Don't you trust your politicians, airlines, and general contractors? I mean, it is the greater New Orleans area, what could go wrong?

I worked out there and hear so many stories about that airport that some should have been made into a movie.
The general consensus I got was the airport was built to be expanded eventually however the train that takes you from the terminal to the concourse was pretty much at max from the start and there was no way to expand that.

In Denver’s case, the argument could be “We now have room to expand” since the city has gotten massively larger over time.
New Orleans? The population of the city and state are shrinking / growing very slowly along with the population of the neighboring state.
I’m wondering how the hell traffic has spiked so much in that time unless they are serving as a hub to more airports.

I seem to remember their baggage handling system was supposed to be some state of the art system but had horrible problems out of the gate

They don’t even come close to using all the gates at the current airport. Pretty sure I’ve read that the way that they will use the new gate set up will be more efficient

Very well could be. I just heard that it was the train system. The baggage system could be a major issue as well.

Yes I trust them all especially when Mitch hired multiple General Contractors to help build this new airport on top of the other General Contractors who were hired to build specialty areas like TSA, Delta Sky Lounge, etc. Yup what happens when mutliple GCs are involved in a project = taxpayers wind up getting royally fricked in the end with new future change orders to fix all the shite that is broken or has to be retrofited.

If the airlines aren't using the gates this month doesn't mean they can't add flights and use the gates when the next flight schedule comes out. Concourse B could ADD 3 jetway means an additional 30 flights. The new airport doesn't have that kind of space.
