A Basset Hound is the perfect old person dog. Basically a sleeping/eating blob of flesh. You must name him Flash.

Our oldest Pug that’s been with us almost 9 years came into our lives just like that, someone abandoned him at the 4way down the street.

When I was a kid, there was this old stray basset hound/beagle mix that everyone in the neighborhood nicknamed Old Roy. He was a sweet old dog who would swing by the house for a couple days every few months. He’d chill out, eat some catfood, get pets, and then move on. Roy never seemed to miss a meal and was welcomed wherever he went.

That is pretty much how I acquired my 11-year-old Shepherd lab mix. Saw two small dogs near our mailbox area by our house. Mid-February cold and rainy and my young daughter is in the car with me.
We bring the two dogs home while I already owned three dogs at the time and put out flyers and contacted the local animal shelters. Had luck giving one dog away but no one wanted the super excited/playful one. Well almost 12 years later and I think we found a keeper. Say hello to Chip.

The same happened to me 5 yrs ago. I found a chocolate lab wandering in the woods, he was skin & bones and after weeks the owner never showed. He was well trained and knew every command so someone had spent a ton of $$ on him. 5 yrs later he weighs 89 pounds and he's the best bird/duck dog I've ever owned and my best friend.

We have fostered quite a few dogs and cats, almost all with the same story of abandonment,etc.
Aggravates the shite out of me. Pets are some work, but it's not much. Don't give me that "I don't have time" crap after you've had a dog and then decide to just drop it off by a lesser used road.

It could belong to a really old person and it got out and is lost. That happens pretty often.
Could be it was abandoned by the family after the owner got sick/died.
You would not believe how many people (I use the term loosely) turn their back on animals that were beloved and faithful companions of elderly family members.
They take them to shelters, dump them out 30 miles from their home, or even just leave them locked in an empty house.
People are worthless.
