So why can't they drive it to a place that isn't flooded to give it up the proper way? To be honest, I'd have no issue with that. I'd still probably say you should have been better prepared are thought about these things before having a dog, but in that spot, I'd be ok with just dropping it off at some type of rescue place.

Oh yeah, that makes a ton of sense.

"Hey! The water is rising at a biblical pace. I know what we should do. Let's drive around like a moron looking for an open shelter IN A frickING FLOOD. Forget the fact that many of the people who might work a shelter have already lost their homes and vehicles, I need to make sure Killer has his kibbles and bits."

If this were a cat most people would probably say they should have strangled the cat before they evacuated.

Nope.

I'm just giving you some shite because you seem to jump on any opportunity to remind us of your views on pets in a crisis.

I do think leaving the dog tied to a sign in the median of a highway is fricked up. Better to leave the dog loose where he can fend for himself I would think.

I'm sure it's not an easy choice to have to make for most reasonable people to have to leave a pet behind.

Limited resources like gas/fuel, money? I mean, most of the roads are more than likely not passable. Traffic must be terrible. They should set aside an entire half day to find a shelter for a dog?
I live in TX, and I knew LA was going to get hit with major rains before it happened, so if you have dogs be prepared(talking about gas, spending money, etc.). If you don't have extra cash for gas, you shouldn't have a dog.

Again, if these people literally had no other option, I get it. My issue is, don't have a dog then. It seems highly unlikely this was just the very last option for a very well prepared dog owner.

I am 100% against abandoning animals for whatever reason

put the dog down yourself before abandoning it

I would have used the cat to stuff under the door to keep water out.

If you can't afford to take care of a dog, you probably have better places to spend your money.

How in the world is that an outlandish statement?

Someone thinks this dog is in Baker, but the police said they don't think so. They said they have rescued many dogs and would not have left a dog chained up on a major street. Any other ideas where this is?

So you would prefer 1st responders and people returning to their homes be met with roaming packs of pit bulls?

Before we launched to start picking people up my brother and I made a conscious decision to allow people to bring their pets if at all possible. If people asked to bring their pets but the boat was too full and we decided it was unsafe at that time we offered 2 choices: 1. take them now and leave the pets or 2. told them we would be back when we had more room. Luckily the water in the area we were in was not rising as fast as other areas so we were able to make it back to everyone we promised we would and got their pets out safely.

I would imagine the NG does not have the luxury of making decisions on the fly like that. They are forced to follow a set protocol designed to protect HUMAN lives no matter the circumstance. People have to do what's right to protect themselves and their family 1st, people may think of their pets as humans but they are not. It's easy to question someone's decisions when you really have no concept of what they are facing at the time.

Obviously, some people can do it. There is no way in hell I could leave my dogs... or the cat, for that matter, behind. Simply couldn't do it. I'd just have to load up the car with the family, what we could gather, 2 dogs and a cat and drive somewhere.

Oh I agree with this.

And I know I seem harsh but this shite just grind my gears because I've got lots of friends and family who just lost everything, so people bringing out the lynch mob over a dog that is perfectly fine is absurd.

A friend lost his house. Like everyone else he didn't foresee it being this bad. Left food and water out for the Animals since he was literally fleeing for his life and tried to get other people out but they wouldn't because they wouldn't leave 5 damn cats.

Now they are stuck in the attic. Cats are probably eating them for food.

And he felt terrible about it. No one forsaw it being like this. He was finally able to boat back a few days later and save them but he thought they were dead.

Is he a terrible person?

I mean, you can't apply the standard rules in this sort of mass tragedy.

Hope y'all and your pets are safe.

no...this isn't better either

if you come to a point where you cannot take of your pet and no one around you will take it from you, put the animal down

have some respect for your pets

This.

Remember when mommy and daddy told you that a "pet is a responsibility"? That means you evacuate with your pet too. Not chain it up like a barbarian so that it can't even escape when the water gets too high.
