Yes.

much more respectful than to jut let it go to "fend for itself", which more times than not, just ends up with the animal starving to death, getting shot/wounded and dying, or hit by a car

or chaining it up to a post hoping that someone will take care of it, but the flip side is that it starves to death or gets attacked by wild animals and brutally killed

Disagree there.

Option A - shooting it: 0% chance of survival
Option B - letting it go: greater than 0% of survival

It is hard to say, yet I feel it is a rash decision, and I agree if you do not have the means to care for yourself how can you afford to care for a pet? That said, I'd risk my life to save my/any pet.

You can tell yourself whatever lie you want to make yourself feel better, but the vast majority of pets that just get released do not end up in the care of some perfect family that takes it in

if I loved my pet, I would put it down myself rather than risking an awful death

I can't imagine a scenario in which I could look at my dogs ,who have loved and relied on me for years, and say- sorry Fido. See ya!

"Hey Mr. Dog, I'll give you two options. First option: I shoot you in the fricking head. Second option: I let you go, hope you survive the flood, and hopefully we'll meet again in the future. Take your pick and make it snappy."

I recognized the store and looked it up on google earth thanks to the big "Money Order" sign and other landmarks.
It' on the corner of Kent and Plank at the entrance to Grove Heights subdivision.

Sure thing, bud.

0% vs greater than 0%

Not sure how that's a lie to make myself feel better.

I agree people shouldn't have pets who can't afford them or who aren't prepared for this, but we're beyond that because these people already had one. Not to mention, this is the real world where people make dumb decisions a lot, so let's look at some statistics. Basically, my theory is some inherently not very responsible folks did the best they could considering the following. Sobering stats. Reminder, these stats are national, not poor arse LA only, where I'm sure they are much worse.

Credit Donkey
quote:

Approximately 26% of adults have no savings set aside for emergencies, while another 36% have yet to start socking away money for retirement.

quote:

As of 2013, the average bank account balance hovered around $4,436

quote:

An estimated 38 million households in the U.S. live hand to mouth, meaning they spend every penny of their paychecks. Surprisingly, two-thirds of them earn a median income of $41,000, which puts them well above the federal poverty level.

quote:

Almost half of Americans would not be able to cover an unexpected expense of $500 or less. Almost a quarter would not be able to cover even $100. An estimated 22.9% of men and 22.7% of women say they don't have at least a Benjamin in their emergency fund.

quote:

How many Americans have less than $500 saved? Having $500 in the bank for emergencies can give you a sense of financial security but for 41% of adults, it's still a pipe dream.

quote:

Saving three months' worth of expenses is a lofty goal. In a survey when Americans were asked if they have a 3 to 5 month emergency fund, just 17% said they do.

because you will tell yourself that your dog will end up being taken care of when it is much more likely your dog is dying an slow, agonizing, awful death

the chances of that are far greater than the alternative, and I wouldn't want to risk that

I was raised in the country where people would routinely let their dogs go in hopes that the dog would "fend for itself" because they were too much of cowards to put the dog down themselves

guess what we did to all those dogs that came to our property?

If someone shot their animal then the outcry would be "OMG THEY ARE SHOOTING INNOCENT PETS!!!" and then they would have the Internet sending them death threats.

And dogs will turn into wild animals if left to their own devices in a crisis. You become predator or prey.

Then why did the last open shelters specifically state "no pets"?

quote:

Require animal shelters, humane societies, veterinary offices, boarding kennels, breeders, grooming facilities, hospitals, schools, animal testing facilities, and any other businesses or not-for-profit agencies that normally house household pets or service animals to create evacuation plans for such animals consistent with the provisions of this Paragraph. Such plans shall be made available to the public upon request and shall be filed annually with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, office of animal health and food safety, and with their respective parish office of homeland security and emergency preparedness.

And Celtic Studios is accepting pets.

I'm not telling myself a lie that he's going to end up in doggie disneyworld. There is a good chance that he dies in any number of ways: starvation, drowning, snakes, other shite. There is also a good chance that he doesn't starve, doesn't drown, doesn't get bit by snakes, etc.

You would rather not give him a chance.

I could never leave my two little helpless puppies like that. No way no how. They did not ask you to buy them. They are devoted to you and you alone. After all the years of taking care of them, you could just abandon them like they meant nothing to you????? I'll tell you this. YOU meant EVERYTHING to them.
