I was a squad leader at e4 and e5

I mean technically that’s correct but I’ve seen many e6 plt sgt’s and I had an e7 1st sgt

Yep lot of e4 squad leaders and team chiefs out there.

Senior E-8

For the OP... If you are referring to a squad of 6 out in a quick mission, I would say E4 through E6

If it's a team of six on an actual deployment, then they'd likely have a MSgt with them.

Can you provide some context? What are they doing, I.e. specialty, mission, etc. That would determine rank structure.

He already did combat controllers and para rescue ... Typical rank is E4-6. Don't deploy in teams , we deploy with the army ... Unless assigned to CSAR unit

OK, so call the leader Sargeant. How would he address the others? He wouldn't call them E5 Joe Blow. Would he just address them by name and not include rank?

I believe in the Air Force they would be referred to as Steve, Bob, John etc. depending on their first name.

Takes an average of 3 years to make E-4 in the airforce

Unless they changed it from when I was in, 25+ years, its exactly 3 years. E1, E2 at 6 months in, E3 at 2 years in, E4 at 3 years, E4 buck Sargent at 4. They were in the process of removing buck from the ranks when i got out. Anything above that you tested for. Of course all is assuming you didn't get busted down in rank.

Team of 6 AF SO lands in Russia in a INFILTRATOR (flying wing) VTOL. They are there to destroy a 'mining' operation. Then flee being cased to hole in the arctic circle and land in a hollow earth where dinosaurs rule. A Russian SO team follows, and hilarity ensues...

It was pretty common for us to address each other by our first or last name unless it was a formal setting i.e briefing or other services/teams there.

Are you planning on publishing a story about something you don't have any experience with? Really?

Good luck with that.

I'm writing a story involving a team of 6. What rank should I make the team leader? How about the other 5? What realistic rankings would those airmen have?
How interesting is a story about six guys shopping at the BX?

I've written two books dealing with the zombie apocalypse. One book about aliens and bigfoot. Five books with dinosaurs...none of which I have any actual experience with in real life. I don't see your point. I'm only trying to get the terminology right concerning AF rankings and how they are addressed.

It's as interesting as a writer could make it. I'm not writing about six guys shopping at the BX though.

Made E-4 in a little over a year in the Navy, but I went in as an E-3 and was CAPed to E-4 on board ship.
