This article doesn't surprise me.
At 32 years old and looking back, it seems like most of the people I graduated with or work with now that are my age or younger lack the necessary drive and discipline that it takes to make it own their own.
I moved out at 18 if for nothing else, to prove to myself I had what it took to pave my own path.
I worked 2, some times 3, jobs to pay my bills and put myself through undergrad without taking on any student loan debt.
It wasn't easy by any stretch, but the pride I had knowing that I did it my way was all worth it.

You are the exception and not the rule here
If my child appreciated it, did his part around the house, paid the bills he could afford to pay and set a good example to the younger kids...I have no issue helping him/her out

480 knows me IRL. He knows more about my background than that post I made.

Damn. Your life sucks. You will have spent your whole life working to satisfy other people.

Building a home to him probably means bought a spec home in development. And married at 22 sounds horrible
Married at 19, we starting having kids at 25. Bought my first house at 21, built my current home at 24. Here I sit at 41, still married to an awesome woman, 2 great businesses running, 2 great kids. Been gone from home since I was 18. My life is far from horrible.
Everyone does it different, I could have never lived at home long after HS graduation. My parents were very easy to live with but I wanted to control my destiny and life. If you're in school and still at home, then great. But if you've graduated more than a year ago it's time to move on!!

Only way I let a child stay with me until 22 + would be if he's contributing to household chores considerably, is very respectful and very appreciative, and pays his own bills.
With no exceptions. These parents are definitely not helping these kids by letting them mooch.
Bingo. When my kids get out of college I'm selling the house and buying a Madden style RV to tour the country with the missus for retirement and visit the fishing boat. They can visit if they can find me. Better yet I'll visit them and live in the Madden bus in their driveway for a few days. They damn sure aren't living on the RV fold away couch.

A Third Of America's 18-34 Years Olds Live With Their Parents
Including 18 year olds is stupid because so many of them literally haven't graduated high school. Not mention the subset of 19 year olds who haven't.
Bottom line. Horrible stat compilation is horrible.

I moved to LSU at 19, I moved back home from LSU at 20, moved to Hammond at 21, moved back home at 23, and have lived in BR since 24. The last time I moved home, I had to pay a third of my net to my parents as rent.
I worked two jobs to live on my own, and wouldn't hesitate to do that again. frick government assistance, and frick owing anyone else money.
