I was drinking a bottle of vodka per day. Developed pancreatitis, kept drinking, became septic and spent five days on a ventilator and additional 1.5 weeks in the hospital and had hallucinations for three days. Wife was told I had less than a 10% chance of surviving. Believe it or not, I started drinking again. Ended up back in the hospital with pancreatitis. Finally admitted I was an alcoholic and got help. It nearly destroyed my family and should have killed me. Two options for alcoholics, die or get sober. If you think you have a problem, get help, you will not regret it

Four stages of chronic alcoholism:
1) Shakes
2) Seizures
3) Hallucinations
4) Delirium Tremens

All are bad but a living hell on earth are # 3 and 4 above.

I knew a lawyer who would take down a handle a day. She was brilliant even when drinking but it caught up with her as it always does and one night after hitting about half a handle passed out and never woke up. She was not even 50. Died alone.

Our former federal district court judge died from complications of hardcore alcoholism. She had the syndrome where your brain effectively dies because you've relied on alcohol for your calories for so long, important nutrients weren't provided to keep the brain alive.

Exactly. Close family friend tried to get help a couple times but couldn't be helped. Died of liver and kidney failure at age 49.

Vodka is for the closet ones. Looks ok in water bottles and all. A little dot on the cap to designate the vodka from water. Keep one under the pillow when you want to wake up.

Good times.

I have a cousin who was always pretty refined about his drinking up until 2 or 3 years ago. He mostly drank high-end wine or cocktails, but didn't seem excessive about it. Either because of COVID or other personal circumstances he went the route of pounding vodka all day and is fighting the good fight after some rehab stints.

This thread is scary. I have never been the type of guy who could drink all day, but I 100% understand how getting involved in an endless grind can make you drink every night to deal with anxiety/depression and get to sleep.

Had a buddy drink himself to death in his 40s. We all saw it coming but nobody could tell him anything. In his mind, he was living his best life.

Got divorced, was the fun party guy for a while, but when friends got married, had kids, or settled down he’d just sit in his house and drink every night alone. Became frail looking, got fired from his job, and just drank alone watching movies or listening to music.

We’d try to go over and spend time but that wasn’t our lifestyle and he wasn’t going to change. Ended up dying alone on his couch with a bottle of rum next to him. Pretty sad and pathetic. He was a good hearted guy that let life get the best of him.

I’ve had a few patients knocking down a handle of vodka a day. A fifth of Jack not that uncommon.

I don't drink any more. I don't drink any less, to be honest.

In my experience, albeit anecdotal, quitting drinking is not difficult. There is no big secret to success. I've done it many times.

My doctor told me that constantly drinking "hard" booze such as whiskey, vodka, or rum is really bad for the liver.

Did your doctor also tell you how to wipe your arse or the earth is round?

With that insight you should start a rehab clinic, no one would be alcoholic anymore if they knew how easy it was to stop

I was one of these. I was drinking a liter of liquor a day to not have seizures. One day I was yellow and they thought I might end up needing a transplant. It’s been about 4 and 1/2 years now and I’m quite healthy today. Getting to the point where you drink that much is literal hell. Very grateful to be alive today.

My mother became an alcoholic and drank herself to death in her early 50s. Before she died, she was drinking at least a liter of gin a day and went through all four of the alcohol-related events:
Four stages of chronic alcoholism:
1) Shakes
2) Seizures
3) Hallucinations
4) Delirium Tremens

Been sober for almost 3 years now. 4 treatment centers, multiple trips to the psych ward, and 3 different ER Trips...one of which I stayed in for 4 days due to seizures, blood pressure, and heart rate complications. I was drinking a liter of vodka a day. Horrible way to live. Almost lost everything. I go to meetings daily and try to make a group meeting once a month. But have the DTs & Hallucinations and then seizures...wouldnt want that on anyone. Most scared in my entire life was when coming out of a seizure blackout and I open my eyes and I am seeing things melt on the walls and my family is crying in my face trying to get me on my feet.

I also mentioned that if you've been there you know it and it ain't pretty. Ever wonder why so many alcoholics commit suicide?

Also not mentioned here is that once your liver starts failing you cannot metabolize alcohol as much as a fully functioning liver and therefore it takes less booze to get you drunk.

I have two buddies who hit the ~fifth a day mark for quite some time before they were forced to make life changes. Both got clean, one relapsed and died, the other is living his best life 10+ years sober.

Yeah a fifth really isn't all that hard to polish off in a day if you are starting early enough

I know my buddies who had problems still managed to lay off during work hours, but the minute they headed home, they stopped at a liquor store every day and drank about a fifth at night. I remember the conversations between us where they'd laugh about how easy it was. Unsustainable.

All day is a different beast.

The weekends they were absolute shite shows. Would barely be coherent at the end of golf rounds and push everyone to go to a bar after until late.

At my peak before I went into recovery, I was drinking half a gallon of Vodka daily.

I took a breathalyzer each time I entered rehab. .256, .289 and a .326 rehab #3.

Rehab 1 was the worst 2 weeks of my life. I had been drinking hard for over a decade. Thats a hangover buds.
