I’d higher someone else to paint them and pay him $75 a mailbox.

This is believable. Once a year we get flyers to paint house numbers in the curb. They have a few patterns you can choose from.
Every year no less than 15-20 houses get it done or redone. I don’t know the exact cost but it’s over $125.

I'd say he has a pretty niche gig

I think I saw him on house hunters. His wife smells candles for a living.
Downtown penthouse. Budget 1.75 million.

It seems ridiculous to pay $100 for a $5 spray can of Krylon and an hour of time, but then time is money.
I've known bricklayers who encase mailboxes in brick. It used to be for $300. No telling what it would be now.

It's called a SIDE HUSTLE. He is not becoming filthy rich off it. He's just making a few extra bucks on the side but it has turned into somewhat a full time job for him.
You guys want to dissect this dude's side hustle like he is a fricking CEO of a fortune 500 company
no we are being realistic....you come on here saying...I know a guy who paints mailboxes for a living....doing 10-15 a day at $100 a pop.....do you understand how unrealistic that is?
literally saying in the OP that a guy painting mailboxes is bringing down 250k a year. people call bullshite on that because it is
then the story changes to its a side hustle and he doesnt work 5 days a week.
realistically he is maybe doing on average 5 per week. so he is making an extra 26k a year as a side hustle.....thats awesome. especially if he doesnt have a great job to begin with or its for retirement, kids school etc. but lets not act like the guy is banking 250k cash like you were.

Your math is horrible. Buccees surely wouldn’t hire your dumbass.
ETA: If he only averaged 5 a day M-F for 52 weeks that’s $130,000 you moron.
how fricking naive do you have to be to think a guy is running around knocking out 1300 mailboxes per year? i mean be realistic.

He's obviously nationwide. Haven't you heard of the traveling mailbox painting industry? Its very lucrative.

Cleaning/sanding/scraping plus the actually painting could take easily 2 hrs a pop
Soda blaster and air compressor would cut that time

When I upgraded to a nicer mailbox, the place that sold them referred me to a retired guy who framed and poured a small concrete slab and bolted the new post/box into it. It was a piece of cake for him, and I was happy to pay him a couple hundred bucks. (I hear that many charge much more.)
That looked like a pretty good one-man side gig, and it didn't require much in the way of tools/equipment.
My neighbor liked my new mailbox, but he is a do it yourselfer. Watching him screw with it made me even happier to spend the money for the old guy to install mine.

Paint the post myself and replace the box for $25. Those people are stupid.

Why pay someone $100 to paint a mailbox when you can replace the entire thing for $50? This sounds made up.

Years ago a young couple in their 20s were going door to door in my neighborhood. They offered to paint your house number on the curb. $20 for just the house number. $30 if you wanted a fleur de lis.
I declined.
But, half the houses in my neighborhood have the numbers on the curb.
They must have made a pretty penny that week.
