The wife was told that she is"very valuable" to the company and they are "pleased" to show this by giving her a 3% raise.

A 3% raise in this economy and inflation is essentially telling your employees that they are worth less this year than last year.

I guess she at least didn't get laid off like a few others at her place did. So, we've got that going for us.

companies woudl go broke if they had to keep pace with inflation. Whatever bullshite 5% numbers the govt tells us is clearly made up fakery adn ACTUAL inflation was likely well over 20% back at the height in the last 12-20ish months. No company is going to give 20% raises to every employee just because.

A company isn’t obligated to give raises at all.

It’s all situationally dependent.

Employers don’t control inflation.

They'd pay more but your wife doesn't look like your avatar.

The only way you’ll get a raise that matches the inflation spike is to change jobs.

High probability she’s working at a place where new hires come in significantly higher than her.

Company trotted out the line that they were only going to give raises to those haven't had one in some time, figured it is time to update the CV and put a couple more certs under my belt.

That’s the point this idea something is better than nothing. That’s what business wants people to think so they can pocket more profit and not lose valuable people.

So if they gave her 3% on a year with lower inflation, would she offer to give the difference back?

Better than nothing. But in the environment we’ve had the last couple of years, that’s not keeping up with the cost of living.

You think companies aren’t raising their prices as well?

All I’ve ever gotten without a promotion of some kind was 3-4%. That 3% is a better raise now than it was 20years ago.

If you want big pay raises, you likely need to job hop a few times.

If a company gave me just a 3 percent raise yearly, I’d blackmail them for a higher raise
